Rear wiper delete.

Today I did a rear wiper delete on the GTI so I thought I'd document it and make a DIY in-case anyone else wanted to do it.

I've done this on a few cars in the past (my R32 GT-R, DC2R Integra, EG Civic, ED Civic), not so much for weight saving, but more for a clean look.

Once the motor is disconnected the rear wiper is automatically disabled and fluid will not come out of the hose if switch is accidentally triggered.

I'll visit JDMyard later today to pick up a wiper delete plug (it's an OEM Honda part) and finish this DIY off but here it is for now:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/4506064829_a0a02839f7_o.jpg
Pull the finishing cap off from the base/bottom. It'll come off easily with your hands.

Remove the 13mm bolt.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2160/4506065099_430d7fe0c8_o.jpg
Getting the rear wiper off is the hardest part of the job as it's wedged in there. Spray a lot of WD40 on it and either wait or continue with the following steps and come back to it later. You will need to pry it off carefully. I ended up using a fat spanner covered in a T-Shirt (to prevent damage), wedged underneath it and I pried it slowly left side, then right and vice versa until it came off. I was patient enough and it took me about 5 minutes before it finally popped off.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4072/4506701082_f3bf43531f_o.jpg
On the inside remove the 2 plastic screws from inside the boot handles.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4506065427_79fe647343_o.jpg
Pulling it off requires some force but trying to evenly apply that force is the hard part. The whole pice is just clipped in but getting a good handle to get the un-clipping going is the hard part. I started with the top left corner by pulling hard on that handle, it finally came off (makes a very loud noise when the clip does release) and from there un-clipped it towards the right, got the right corner off then the rest came off easily.

The wiper motor: Remove the water hose + wiring harness (simply lift plastic tab and slide off for both). Remove the 3 10mm bolts holding down the motor and remove the motor completely.

Motor removed.

Zip tie the harness + hose together to prevent rattling.

Wiper assembly removed. Total weight 1.02kg.

It's threaded.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2411/4506582591_1cdfd54b40_o.jpg
I had to get into MacGuyver Mode. I scrounged around the man cave and found a few good bits: An allen key bolt, a red washer made of rubber, something you would find in the plumbing section at Bunnings. A carbon bicycle headset spacer and also a carbon fibre bicycle stem top cap.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2333/4506582695_70bd44c230_o.jpg
This is how it all came together in the end on the underside (note: I will be applying silicone all around this to prevent leaks).

I might give rainx a go

Yeah that stuff works ok but would have to apply it fairly often doesn't seem to stay on that long. Or use a good window cleaner (i use invisable glass from waxit).

Now you just need a single wiper on the front as AP said, but you have to make it stop half way and drive around like that :D

Changed my wiper plug to a generic rubber plug also made by Honda. I prefer this one, it's smaller and I like the way it looks:

Did mine too, really like it.

I also waxed my rear window with some swissvax. And it rained all day and night the next day. The swissvax did its job, and i put some on the fron too - I hardly needed the wiper as the water would just stream off

any bike shop mate

I didnt even need a spacer. I just used a headset cap with a short bolt, a rubber washer from the plumbing tool box, and I used the original rubber plug that was in the window instead of a spacer.

Most bike shops would give you a top cap and bolt for free too

I ordered mine from honda dealer, took 2 days.

anthony, as far as photos, the car has been put back together again but ill try explain.

insert the plug from the outside.

On the inside, use a rubber washerand place behind the plug, on the inside of the glass. On top of this, use the rubber grommet, which you took out of the hole, which acts as the original water proof seal. Place the grommet on top of the washer, then through this, insert you headset cap with bolt. As you tighten the bolt, the rubber grommet will compress. You may need to hold the delete plug from the outside to stop it from spinning when tightening, but it doesn't need to be TOO tight. I tested this by directed a stream of water straight to it, and got no leaks.

LOL guys I just checked this all out, maybe I should design up a kit for this, will look into it in future.

Tendy has done the same modification. Same Honda plug (the solid metal one not the rubber one). I'm not sure about what bolt he used though, best to ask him. Here's a pic I took of his car last week:

Yes it's plug and play but getting the big rear plastic trim panel off is a pain, it's also a pain to get it back on. You have to be patient with it otherwise you could damage some of the clips. When putting it back on make 100% sure the little metal clips all line up otherwise you will end up bending a few of them.

I was trying to make the hatch a touch lighter which originally led me looking into this. My hatch pop isn't always doing it's job due to the heavier RVC and deadening.

I wasn't a fan of the above solutions/kits, and found a better looking one here:

http://www.gecleant.de/

It's the cleanest and most OEM looking. It'll reflect in the same way the window does too. The UK boys use them quite a bit.

Till it arrives, I'm rocking duct tape.

Bump to an old thread, have you installed this plug? I'm looking at removing my wiper this week and was wondering if I should opt out for a normal black one or wait for something as nice as this.

I'm confused by the comments made about not being able to see out the back...
I can't see out the back when it rains even with the rear wiper. It just makes a mess of things and gives that yucky dirty outline in parts it doesn't wipe.

I will definately be doing this mod in the near future, and will be getting one of these with a special logo I have in mind :D :

If you keep your car relatively clean even if it rains it shouldn't affect your vision too much if any at all. I've had no problems, I've never used my rear windscreen wiper since the day I got my car and mainly removed it for aesthetics (also easier to wash your car)

Well O'Brien glass wanted to charge me $792.
I am having it done by Campsie Glass Repair or whatever they're called. Great guy - Phoned yesterday, he said he would get back to me today. He called this morning and he is going to my house today to do it for $336. To have it re-tinted he is charging an extra $88.

All up this wiper delete cost me much more than expected :) I would still recommend it is a DIY - As once I actually calmed down after breaking my window I took some time and it came off fine...

I've bought the glass grommet and will be getting it laser engraved with the following image (my company logo). It's perfectly symmetrical too which is a plus..

You work for Beretta?

Personally it looks great, but I would not do it as I would miss the rear wiper coming on when putting the car in reverse and it senses rain =)

Hey CSR, To answer your question - No. I tested it before I cable tied it back up etc.

P.S - How about this FAIL from myself.
NOTE TO SELF - Do not attempt DIY's when you are in a rush - It could turn out bad - And cost you alot of money ;(
Yes feel free to laugh...

That's so unlucky, I hope this doesn't deter other people from doing it DIY. The bolt is done up pretty tight and getting off is a bitch, only advice I can give is be patient and persistant

I never use the rear wiper so no loss to me..When it's in auto mode actually I find sometimes it just starts wiping for no reason and has that scratchy sound.

And yes I work at Beretta, family business in Australia :)

Ouch, that hurts.
Rubber mallet is your friend to loosen up that wiper arm.

After having the window installed yesterday I installed the Wiper Delete plug with all the other bits that I bought from Bunnings and the local bicycle shop.
It was super simple!

All in all my review for this DIY would be - Give it a go - Its simple... Just be GENTLE!!! lol
I am still happy I made this modification - It just cost me a lil more than it should have.

Where is the easiest place to get my hands on the plug? Bunnings?

Cost me $38 shipped to my door (but I got the cleaner / glue as well). Bastards charged me 19% tax which I don't understand, that should automatically be deducted given it is overseas..

I just did this wiper delete tonight and I have to say getting the back cover off with all those clips is the second most frustrating thing i've ever done in my life - the first was GETTING THE FUCKING THING BACK ON!!

I broke about 3 clips but luckily (for now) there doesn't seem to be any rattling..

Hey Clemente,
Was the cleaner/glue worth it?
I know its only like 10bux or less difference but was just wondering what they were? :S

They are cleaner..and glue ;D

Nah mate nothing a regular super glue and glass cleaner won't do. The cleaner is to remove the streak on the glass from the original wiper rubber stopper thingy. Glue is to glue. Household items really!!

Just received my glass plug w/ the cleaner and glue. I have a question on the install of it... Do we use the glue on the "lip" of the plug only? I was reading the install instructions on the site and it said something about reusing a rubber ring from the stock wiper? is that true? thanks

CSR

Erm...Nope I didn't use any rubber ring from stock wiper >.> . I put the glue on the lip yes and then you push it in from the inside. No idea where a rubber ring would go!

Hey fellas, since many have done a rear wiper DELETE, can someone kindly donate/sell a rear wiper blade thingy that clips on the arm. Not the whole unit.

Some crack head decided to steal mine of the car. Idiots!!
