Hi guys, I recently purchased a C version RNS510 and put it in my 06 R32 last night.
Wanting to spend as little as possible I looked for alternatives to buying a new canbus (I know it's only $100 but that is a carton of Leffe or Chimay!!!)
While researching I found a UK forum that has modified the 27xx firmware so that you don't need to upgrade the canbus.

You can find the post here http://vwnavi.com/showthread.php/13672-Unofficial-272x-software-and-SWL-recovery-CD

Time will tell if it has solved the power drain issues using a software fix and I'll report back in a few days on whether my battery is dead or not.

Oh and I take no responsibility if you try this method and it doesn't work, I'm just providing a link...

I don't understand why you want to run such old firmware?

Honestly it's a car worth quite a bit of money, $100 on a canbus gateway is hardly going to bankrupt you.

Even our mate Rob did it.

But all the best and hope it works for you.

The hack for the HDD re-partitioning only works with FW2760. That's why it's good! [FW3xxx are still beta IIRC]. A CanBus upgrade for a DSG vehicle is a piece of piss to do.....

Point taken. have you done yours yet?

Point taken, but throw time and convenience into the mix (such as waiting for the canbus to arrive and needing vag com coding etc) and the software hack as a first option looks appealing. i.e. I installed the unit in 20 mins, the update took 40 mins and now I'm up and running with no issues (as yet).
Also I haven't seen that great a difference between 2760 firmware and the latest versions to warrant it.
Also I like the idea of hacking ;)

Just in case anyone is interested the modified firmware version to solve the battery drain issues works. No flat battery.

Happy little vegemite!
