Long time coming perhaps?

Thought I would share with everyone as I just finished my last exam a few hours ago ;-)

Bought the car in August of 2009, from a lovely gentleman in Melbourne. Was advertised on ozvolks, and didn't even make it to carsales.
Flew down to inspect. Flew back to buy it, and drove it back to Sydney.

Straight after the Melbourne to Sydney drive:
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/621/img5654q.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/15/img5654q.jpg/)

So when I bought her she had 59 xxx kms, and following list of items

APR ECU Tune
StaSiS (Koni) Coilovers
Carbonio carbon fibre CAI

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1937/img0519resize.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/175/img0519resize.jpg/)

Stasis Coilovers:
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/3661/imag0037l.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/94/imag0037l.jpg/)

Being a mechanic, I did my own work and maintenance.

Shark Fin antennae. Awful radio reception with standard OEM HU. Kenwood one fared much better

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/1685/img1712f.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/442/img1712f.jpg/)

Kenwood Head Unit

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/2561/img1105l.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/683/img1105l.jpg/)

Defi Racer Gauge - Oil Temp, new south performance offset pod

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/4757/img1095v.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/683/img1095v.jpg/)

Dynamat driver's door. Only Driver's door as I have not allocated anytime to it in more than a year I think.

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/509/imag0033f.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/23/imag0033f.jpg/)

Adjustable RCA Gruvenparts:

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/966/img0673bq.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/img0673bq.jpg/)

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3641/img0675resize.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/196/img0675resize.jpg/)

Custom catback exhaust from the States. Not my preferred sound, but the performance increase was hard to ignore. So much so, I sold the old OEM one to Dylan :-)

Painted the grille black. The horizontal slats look 90s. Honeycomb would be nice, buuut I am not made of money

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/6671/img1065edit.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/143/img1065edit.jpg/)

Removed the 'dingleberry'

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/4277/imag0194.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/841/imag0194.jpg/)

The car went through 3 sets of suspension. Why?

Because, IMO the MkIV has too short of travel for the suspension:
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/7392/img0106eg.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/254/img0106eg.jpg/)

I am now sort of content with the HPA SHS Coilovers.

Bilstein PSS

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/1429/img6941resize.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/200/img6941resize.jpg/)

And finally HPA SHS Coilovers

Afterwards:

Recaro from a Lancer Evolution V

Should be in already but the place that sent it, couldn't even send all the parts required the first time around. Waste of time and money!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4pFbaMBFl4I/Tqjr8Nsr_-I/AAAAAAAAA0s/C6wpEmfJggA/s640/2011-09-11%25252016.09.18.jpg

APR ECU tune
Carbonio CAI
Dieselgeek Short Shifter
Custom Cat Back Exhaust
Porsche Twists - 18 x 7.5, 18 x 10
HPA SHS Coilovers
GruvenParts Adjustable rear control arms
MkV Polo wiper
Shark Fin Antennae
Kenwood HU
Defi Racer Oil Temp gauge
Seriously, lots of love and affection. Sometimes not ever enough time!

To Do:
H&R sway bars
and my missus got me a Cupra Lip for my birthday :)

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of whacking in the Recaro

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wiEYpej_iew/TsJChkyGAyI/AAAAAAAABOw/8qUEN20QrXY/s640/20111112_190919.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-KiWDD41CmG8/TsJDc_vXfUI/AAAAAAAABPA/msrL4pxYsUw/s640/20111112_172528.jpg

A picture of the mounting bracket, sliders,
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UILIdeh8_b0/TsJCOzS429I/AAAAAAAABOo/sP_Nj_YVc74/s640/20111112_190941.jpg

Seat base is flatter, more parallel to ground. So the lower thigh support isn't as snug. the height is pretty much the same as previously in the Konigs (I had them set low anyway).
The new mounting system is tighter and firmer than the OEM setup. The OEM system had play and made noises and exhibited minute movements.
The seat reclines with the dial/rotator. But does not feature the same retracting mechanism of the OEM seat (recline forward and slide forward). May be a bit of a compromise for some, but I am not overly bothered. (YET)
Have issues with airbag light coming on after the resistor worked loose (i think) while driving. Can't seem to clear the code a this stage.

Overall I am very happy with the upgrade (?).
There is more support for my upper body, the bolsters are easier to moneauver over and easier to pass through.
Fabric doesn't look or feel as good as leather. but im over leather. wrinkling, squeaks and sweaty backs and butt when the temps go over 23.5C

Also had discs and pads put in. Had dramas with the pedal feel and after hundreds of dollars in brake fluid, hours of my own labour as well as European Autotech (when I ran out of ideas), it went to the track with a different pedal feel. There was brake fade, but pedal was not bad. defintely not the bite I am used to ALL the other times.

DISCS: Adams Rotors - Slotted and dimpled
Pads: Akebono ceramic compound

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-CTLtHxEl0Ww/TsL8Upbj4wI/AAAAAAAABPQ/-qxpX_wSxWU/s640/20111104_215506.jpg

The rear discs are Tommy R32's.

And a recent shot of my car at work on a Friday.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zAkX8K6wTu8/TsL_TUkcrjI/AAAAAAAABPo/5dO8ksiYS9E/s640/20111104_121109.jpg

No pics, but raised the negative camber at the back with the gruvenparts adjustable control arms (http://gruvenparts.com/website/imgs/fullsize/107.jpg)
Also washed the car in the rain before a full day cruise on the 27th. Pics here: https://picasaweb.google.com/dainese01/GolfMkV26Nov?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCP_rr_vxge7EIg&feat=directlink

24th November 2011

Also fixed the airbag warning light with another resistor. The original one was the incorrect resistance.
So, while the workshop in the USA did some quality work, their slopiness in some areas was very notable, and uncool too.

Have a driveby video from Saturday's cruise too:

Nah, only stuff of dreams. Full time study is the priority for now. And perhaps holidays too.

Oh yeah, wanted to rinse it quickly before driving to bondi. So annoying that every clown only decides to keep the car clean when its sunny.
Should keep it clean often instead.

And a little digression here:

Girlfriend had her Polo Gti crashed into by an off duty taxi driver (yes, they do drive badly as you had thought).
Polo, ruined: intercooler, LCA, shock guard, bumper.

So we found out we could hire a car and be reimbursed for the costs. The missus booked an audi a3, but they didn't have it when she went to pick it up.
So. They gave her an 2010 audi a4 1.8t

Sorry to hear about the Polo Justin, bloody taxi drivers.
Its not surprising, most of them have zero hazard/car awareness at all.

Atleast you guys aren't slumming it in the Audi though!

I like the lip, looks great.
Was it hard to install?

Audi is so comfortable. Quiet too. Boring like bat poo but. Quality car.

It's a little fiddly. Reasons are that the lip has limited tabs or sections in which you can use to secure to car, and also the shape is also different to mk4. Hope you're well mate. I'm down for a drive, let me know.

Ahh, so these are the rims you mentioned
I was eyeing off a set of SSRs for a while, but seems the soft MKVI offsets don't really work well

Looks hot on the MKIV though, what offset are they?

Did you consider painting the centres?
Bronze or charcoal would look pretty trick, happy to photshop for you if you send a side profile shot...

It wasn't. But because they didn't have sorter ones, and that I calculated the rears wrong. (Sort of their fault too. )They all had to be cut short and cleaned up. My Sparky mate was a God send. 4 inch Angle grinder FTW

you car looks great Justin and i love everything about this build cept im totally confused why the hell would you want to swap the brilliant and rare OEM Konig R32 heated leather seats for 1 cloth EVO recaro that doesnt match the rest of the interior? i could understand if you bought a pair of hard core Recaros like Justin Fox or AP, or even the one Bride bucket like the JDM guys do. but i cant help thinking your interior would be the equivant to walking around with one thong on?

Thanks mate. I know, I've been getting that here and there.
I have the other seat ready to go in. It actually took the bracket fabrication company from the US 4 packages to get the delivery complete.

I'm simply not that hardcore as the others. i can't afford to be like that.

Yeah, leather sucks. seriously, it does. it smells good, it feels good (sort of), but in almost every other aspect its a con for me.
Also, I am a skinny bastard and upper support for me isn't great. The side bolsters are so fat that my elbows always hit it.

Add to that the rattling and play that they have (Go European ). Which can't really be fixed, as they are joints and rollers, and mecahnisms that are pressed in etc.

The Recaro from the EVO wasn't my first choice. But it was a great price and i had to factor in mounting hardware, and my ridiculous obsession with this car despite my full time uni and part time work only made these seats the best choice for me.

Overall, I am very happy with the seats, and after a track day, full day cruise on saturday, a few hot days, a few short drives, the seats are better for me in nearly all aspects in comparison to the konigs. I dont need heated seats, if they aren't leather and they are every so slightly lighter too.

They dont look as great, but the black matte plastic shape of the recaros and bucket shape spells sporty to me. will have trouble with reclining as new seat sliding mechanism obviously doesn't have the rear access feature present on hatchback seats

Sexy as F@#$@!!

Yeah, definitely. Not soon though. There is some fading currently and also some wear.

no, actually. its just a brand that i used when i was in high school, when i was obsessing over motorbikes. i still like them, but i grew out of them as i got older.

So after 11+ hours detailing the car. We increased the clarity ten fold, removed 90 percent of swirls and imperfections, and improved the depth a great deal too. It's liquid smooth and looks and feels fantastic. So stoked.

Used:
Dodo juice clay and lube
Mint apc
festool rotary, festool rotex, carcareproducts das6 pro
Menzerna polishes FG500, PF2500.
Mint apc wash again
Dodo juice lime prime
Duragloss 601 bonding agent
Duragloss 105 sealant
Duragloss 111 clear coat polish.

Will layer the car with dodo juice blue velvet wax soon, and. Top up with dodo juice red mist.

Thanks to pierre's rotary wielding skills and car care products (http://www.carcareproducts.com.au/).

Spent 6 hours on her today. Posting because it was productive.

So... I always thought that the raspy exhaust note was normal. And well, it is. What I made the mistake of doing was (like an idiot), think that the mild rattle on acceleration @ 1500-2500rpm was part of the note... The rattle didn't continue through the rev range. Indicating that it was a vibration on materials and perhaps not a sound characteristic.

It was the heat shield above the muffler. So I dropped the exhaust, got a bunch of gravel in face, hair and eyes.

Cleaned with Duragloss all wheel cleaner, then APC, pressure washed and air pressure blown, then sun roasted with todays nice weather.
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7272/img20120403145806.th.jpg (http://img140.imageshack.us/i/img20120403145806.jpg/)
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4711/img20120403154617.th.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/img20120403154617.jpg/)

So after it was cleaned and dried, I padded the upper side with Dynamat. Leaving the holes and mounts exposed. Worked a treat. You could drop it flat on the ground and it just 'thuds' now (as opposed to a racket of thin sheet metal reverberating through the air).
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/2387/img20120403155125.th.jpg (http://img109.imageshack.us/i/img20120403155125.jpg/)

Also, saw a wonderful opportunity to upgrade the rear sway bar to a 21mm H&R. Also changed the D-bushes.
(See mini opinion piece at end of photos)
http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/2903/img20120403161619.th.jpg (http://img813.imageshack.us/i/img20120403161619.jpg/)

Because the SSR's I bought have a spoke option that's not specced for one with a chunky caliper, I have had to run a 15mm spacer in the front to bring the ET down to 22. This was still so close that both sides scuff the caliper retaining clip (it reduces the flex on compression). I had to shave these down to be thinner. They were rusting abit, so I sanded it all down, primed it and painted it brake caliper black. (i can't paint for shit)
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/179/img20120403173520.th.jpg (http://img72.imageshack.us/i/img20120403173520.jpg/)

An upskirt for the perverts out there.
http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/5016/img20120403173538.th.jpg (http://img692.imageshack.us/i/img20120403173538.jpg/)

I also applied Nanolex to the front wheel's faces and lips, and AutoGlym's alloy wheel seal to the inner barrels. Reason being; a) cheaper b) easier to cover a larger area.

Wheels were cleaned with Duragloss AWC, then diluted APC and repeated twice. Nanolex also requires cleaning with Isopropanyl Alcohol, and this was done twice. noticed that some of the paint is flaking (its machined aluminium/alloy underneath!) and that the lips are stained in some sections, maybe should have hit it with autosol paste polish...
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7828/img20120403174500.th.jpg (http://img407.imageshack.us/i/img20120403174500.jpg/)
http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/1853/img20120403174506.th.jpg (http://img607.imageshack.us/i/img20120403174506.jpg/)
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/5562/img20120403173502.th.jpg (http://img96.imageshack.us/i/img20120403173502.jpg/)
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1799/img20120403173506.th.jpg (http://img14.imageshack.us/i/img20120403173506.jpg/)

So, results?
Exhaust doesn't have the rattle at that RPM range..! Can't believe I thought it was normal For more than 2 years...
It sounds healthier and meatier now. Still not my ideal exhaust note overall, but I can't afford and dont want to buy a new exhaust anyway.
Dynamat is really good stuff. Have it in drivers door too.

The sway bar was also a pleasant improvement. I gave it a good prod and test run around the neighbourhood (slalom, sweepers, roundabouts etc) and it really does feel better.
The turn in is much more positive and reactive. mid corner balance seems less wallowy. and I reckon it tracks better mid corner and has more grip and assurance.

My next tasks for maintenance and repairs are;
The weak pedal (suspected master cylinder). follows on from the drama in getting the car ready for Wakefield last year.
N/S door lock actuator doesn't register opening of door.
Need new tyres, to replace front worn pair, and to stop the scrubbing (Rayray, said that 'you ain't dubbin, if you ain't rubbing'. But i don't know...)
Put the other Recaro in.
Install 12" sub and amp that my mate gave me.

Thats the thing, maintenance means it stays cleaner longer and when it does get dirty, its easier to clean. trust me, its worth it. the time invested now will be seen immediately and ongoing. That said, I dont drive mine everyday (maybe 2-3 days a week
