Hey everybody
Just curious to know as to what oils people use when changing theirs? I've just been letting the VW stealer/Derek @ EA change the oil as per the specs of my engine but just wondering if anyone has a preferred oil that they use in their cars?
only reason why i'm asking is because I'm wanting to change oils to something else purely so that I know what's going in my car (for peace of mind too) but i'm not sure what ones are best for our 2.0 turbo engines...
little help?
I use Motul 8100 ester. 0W-30 Derek also use the same oil for his own car.
I tried the Motul 300V 5W-30 but feel no difference and more expensive

Mobil 1 0W-40 usually, but I was going to swap to the Castrol LongLife 5W-30 that is recommended by VAG. Our GTI was serviced yesterday and I had assumed that Lennock Volkswagen would use the high end Castrol gear, but on our invoice it staes they have used Shell Ultra Helix. So I think I'll just go back to Mobil 1 and supply it with servicing (which I did for 15K and 30K). I change oil myself at 7500km intervals too.
Oh, usual disclaimer applies, probably best to make sure whatever oil you choose meets with VW 504.00/507.00 spec (check your user manual to make sure my memory is right with those codes, haha).

Mobil1 0W-40 every 7500Km. Never a problem. No tops ups required.
Castrol long life 5W-30 from memory. Same stuff that the dealer uses.
I picked up a container when super cheap had a sale for about $80 cheaper than what the dealer charges. The only difference is it doesn't have the little VW symbol on the bottle, but it still has in the fine print that is suits the standard VW grade.
While we are on the topic of oils I have a quick story. When I bought my previous 07 Comfortline 2.0L TDI I purchased it from Melbourne from a toyota dealer and had it shipped up via truck to NSW to my door.
It was a bit of a surprise at the time because a mate dropped me off at home and it was sitting in the driveway 4 days earlier than when it was due. Anyway it had no plates or rego so I couldn't drive it, but I was so excited I took it for a short spin up the driveway and onto the road in the street. Out of nowhere there is a huge amount of smoke pouring from the car, not the usual amount that its meant to blow. Turns out the yard I bought it from (a big toyota dealership) did a service before it went on the truck, but they used toyota diesel oil in the 2.0L TDI!! Friggin idiots! We had it drained and put the proper spec oil in and the car ran like a dream after that.

I don't think the Castrol Edge 5W-30 you can buy in the chain stores is the same as the Castrol SLX Longlife III 5W-30, but stuffed if I know what the differences are. You're right, though, the Edge brand still meets VW spec, and that's probably all that really matters.
Here's an FAQ from Castrol (http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9014090&contentId=7027092) that talks a bit about Edge.
