View Full Version : PCV Replacement

Just bought the PCV replacement kit from ECS Tuning which includes a replacement breather pipe WITH check valve. Think I am slightly losing boost, very slight roughness at idle, nothing too major. Stg 1 at the mo.
I noticed in someones thread that Aus cars do not have check valves. My car is a 3dr my08 fsi german build, does this mean i will need to remove the check valve or not?
I also notice that no-one in aus has mentioned this before, is it a big deal, why do some have it and others not? Do all Aus cars not have it?
Any help would be appreciated before I start taking things apart.

yes no problems, this is the link http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_V--2.0T/Engine/Emission/ES8209/, also bought cam follower and wiper replacements, and piston type oem DV.
All yet to be fitted. Was going to just buy the updated Rev E PCV mechanism, but on their website, they say that it must be fitted in conjunction with the new breather pipe. I dont even know if I need it... Not sure if existing breather has a check valve.
I did read that the us guys remove the ckeck vavle anyway??
I am pretty sure that our cars dont have that rear check valve at all.

Hi Yarn,
Not sure if you have done this mod yet but thought I'll give you the heads up regardless.
I bought the same PVC kit as you and installed it without the breather hose first as the breather hose was a bit of a bitch to get too.
Car started fine... but was idling very oddly. It was idling 1000Revs then to 2000revs constantly.
Drove for a day but problem was still there. Decided to isntall the breather hose as well and problem is now gone.
Mine is an 09 model Pirelli and it didn't come with the check valve.

Thanks for the heads up. I have actually been really slack and have not gotten around to it, same with the BSH True Seal Intake that has been sitting in my garage for 4 months. But will will put in the breather hose when I fit it.
Wouldn't just be a pIRELLI thing would it? (I've a 3 dr MY08 non pirelli).

I'm guessing unless it's late 09 or MK6 that it would be teh same case.

Hold on, I am a bit confused. The breather came WITH or WITHOUT check valve. Which one did mshl1979 install, breather hose with or without check vavle.

yarngti, from what i understand our Aus delivered GTI dont have check valve in the breather hose. when buying the PCV i ignored this line "MUST BE used in conjunction with updated breather pipe (ES#7511)". this updated breather hose has the check valve. and works hand in hand with the PCV apparently.

Ok let's start again.
Check this DYI out explains all:
http://oooo-a3.blogspot.com/2008/03/pcv-replacement-and-eurojet-valve.html
Just note THE PCV unit actually has one less check valve as it's moved to the metal bit. The metal breather hose I installed DID have the check valve. But I did not replace the stock hoses connecting the engine to the PCV. The stock plastic breather hose from the PCV has no check valve. All the check valves are in the black PCV thing not in the hoses. The OEM Upgrade kit from ECS adds the check valve to the metal breather hose.

The metal breather hose is installed at the back of the engine near the turbo. The hoses connecting from the PCV to the engine are not changed if you purchased the OEM upgrade kit from ECS. Which includes these 4 parts:
06F 129 101 F New breather ('PCV') valve
06F 103 215 A New pipe with checkvalve
06F 103 483 E Gasket
06F 145 757 F Gasket

This hose is not changed if you bought the OEM kit

The Eurojet FIX does not change anything else besides this hose adding the check valve to it. Some people have doe the ECS PCV kit along with this Eurojet mod.

I had my idling problem because I only installed the PCV and didn't install the metal breather hose connecting to the turbo. I believe the Eurojet kit does not need anything else.

This is the kit i bought. Does not include the black accordian style, only the metal breather hose.

the black accordian tube doesnt have check valve so as long as it doesnt hav a crack or something you dont need to replace it..

Wasn't too bad. The Torx bolt/screws are a bit hard to reach becaue of there location. But I had decent torque wrench with the bendy arm thing so It was relative straight forward.
The link I posted above provides a great guide on how to remove it.
I wouldn't risk just getting the PCV valve and not the breather hose. Simply because there is now cars with have the same problem when we didn't installed the breather hose.

Today I think I read every thread on the internet about pcv fixes. One interesting thing I read from Phil at BSH said that he tested 3 brand new pcv and they all leaked from new from as low as 6%, 10% and 16% IIRC.
I have no idea how he measured this however. The thread in question was 46 pages long and turned into a slanging match between BSH and Eurojet.
