I just got it so still trying to get use to it but its a cool looking thing. Its basically a big iphone. The touchscreen is pretty good and is very quick to load up apps and internet.

Im sorry i just dont understand the excitement surrounding the iPad.
Its not the best document reader
Its useless as an internet device given it has no keyboard.
Its a pretty expensive digital photo frame?!!
What are people actually planning to use these for? Other than saying "i got one!"

The "i" phenom is an enigma wrapped in a puzzle covered in the sause of a brain teaser....
its the same thing with the iPhone.
Apple knows how to market their product. Making them desirable beyond logical reasoning.

Okay I cant get it off my GF who has been busy playing the bird game for the last two hours. Initial review is that the Build quality is excellent its quite substantial but surprsingly light.
Function wise it does what it advertises well. You have complete mobility to download emails, surf the web, watch movies in the toilet :-) and download pictures off your camera. It does have a bluetooth key pad that you can buy but the onscreen one works great. It will make a great travel companion whether you are in your favourite coffe shop or trotting around the globe. Provided you have free Wi Fi.
The back lit LED throws up amazing images and the text off the books i down loaded is pretty good.
One thing I am impress with is the SPEED. Its fast and much faster than the iphone 3GS with no lag. Photos load faster than my core duo lap top.
Negatives - not widescreen,. No HDMI, need adapters and more adapters, no muliti tasking and the biggest FLAW is no flash.
Would I pay for one? Not sure yet but in my industry you take things for granted sometimes..
Cept for watching porn whilst youre sitting on the dunny I think a netbook would do better at most things described above. I think the iPad looks a bit too bulky to be a real contender as a travel companion.
If I wanted to read documents id get a kindle or something like that. Theyre thinner with a screen thats easier on the eyes and have much better battery life.
Dont get me wrong im not an apple hater. I have an iphone and i think it makes a great little computer in my pocket. Not the best of phones but the app diversity is second to none. Thats why I chose it.
I just think the iPad fills a niche that doesnt really exist.

I dont personally see the attraction either, i mean it's just a big iphone isn't it? I'd rather get a macbook pro or something.
Do they come with a stand? I think i'd get sick of holding it (that's what she said).

i like the ipad and will get one! i definitely like toys like this... by some people's theories... why do we need a laptop? When people have desktop at home and work. It is just even more convenient really.
It won't replace desktop or laptops, it wasn't designed to do that. I think it will go up against those mini laptops people carry around though. I'm not going to use it for work or proper computer use... i think i will keep it in the bedroom, so when i wake up i can sit there for 10-15 minutes to browse the internet before waking up. Probably have it in the kitchen so i can follow recipes etc.
I think there are many ways people can use the ipad.... people questioned the iphone as well.. yet people still get it.

I think you can do most stuff on an iPhone that you can do on an ipad, and don't see you would really need both. Would be better for your eyes I guess, but wouldn't walk around using one.

well it is not the same thing as an iphone.... it is just a more convenient and simpler version of a laptop... so now there are 3 levels of "computers" desktops, laptops and ipad.
Ipad would be ideal for people who just uses it to check emails, browse the net and nothing else. And i think there are alot of people who does that. You won't need internet connection at home, it is bigger than an iphone (not everyone like using iphone to go on the internet especially the older generation.)
So i think for most of us, who are in the internet age, and are male and obviously spend alot of time on the computer, wouldn't really understand the perspective of ipad users.
I've pre-ordered one and i'm going to give it to the parentals after i play with it for a few days, than get one of my own. But they love the idea, they have my old desktop, it is bulky and takes up alot of space, for just checking occasional emails and going on skype for them and facebook.
Simplicity is the key, i will teach my dad to put it on the breakfast table, check the stock market, check his emails etc. Instead of taking like 5 minutes to turn on the internet etc etc.

I'm sure some people will love it, but for me I dont see the point. I love my iPhone but see no use for an iPad, its too big to be conveinient outside the office or home, and too restrictive to replace the notebook which is what its aimed at.
For the money you can get something much more functional IMO.
The way I look at apple is that its almost a cult, those who are fully into it are like scientologists at times, following with no thought and just buying to be part of the 'club', dont get me wrong apple make some beautiful products design wise, but they arent the most powerful nor the best VFM.

BUT it is NOT aimed at replacing the notebook!! i think that is where your thinking went side track.
Plus not everyone wants the same "functionality" as you. The ipad might not be enough for you, but it would be plenty for many others.

Good to see that the debate rages on. So a month has passed since my original post and what wins me over is the simplicity of it all. I dont see myself taking it to a cafe but its been great just lying around the house. Quick start up and instant excess to all things we take for granted, checking the weather, head lining news, ASX update, looking at photos or playing games all on a bigger screen. The touch screen is something that needs to be experienced firts hand. Its amazing.
Granted you can do it all on an iphone but its much quicker and you see more detail. Its thin, light, long battery life, no cords or start up time wins it for me.
On the subject of Apple being cult like and over protective? Why not arent most major brands? Or is it clever marketing, innovation and knowing whta their customers want? I mean they nearly went broke in the late 80's and 90's and had to claw its way back from the ever popular IBM based PC's and Windows back then so no wonder they have legal teams the size of armies (in every region it operates) to protect its assets.
Inevitably people still have a choice. ;)
There is an ounce of truth in that ;)

I think it would be fine for mums and dads that don't have a computer or know how to use one, but agree it would be a bit frustrating and limiting. I still don't even know how to email more than one photo on the iphone, and sometimes drops the attachments. Can't handle forwarding emails with other types of attachments either which is useless.
Has anyone Jailbroken one yet? It could slow down performance a bit but still worth it for the extra functionality. Things like the wifi/bluetooth toggles are worth it straight away instead of going through menus turning it on/off.
Would still be good to have sitting on the couch but so would one of those small notebooks.
My dad been jonesing for the ipad. It's perfect for him to read news.
Also when I travel, the upside is when you go through the airport scanner, you don't have to take it out from the bag :)
It's not perfect, that's for sure but it will do for some.
