Are you restricted to a mk1 GTI only?

Theres this mint mk2 GTI on sale at a cheap price tag. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f23/mk2-16v-2l-sale-43487.html
its got the 2.0 16v engine too :)

If not, be on the lookout for some of them at vwatercooled, there's quiet a few members doing rebuilding and selling there. ie: Golf Loon. , you could probably pm them.

if youre looking to buy an old school golf that "other forum" is Australias biggest watercooled VW community so its probably the place to keep an eye out.
They dont give you access to the classifieds until you have 10+ posts.

As above though you wont find a reasonably priced genuine MK1 GTI in Australia unless you stumble across someone silly enough to not know what they have. A good one if you can find it will probly cost you $10k+

MK2 GTIs in Australia generally suck compared to the Euro spec ones too. We never had 2 doors. Only late model 4 door cars with big bumpers, aircon and asthmatic engines. It is possible to wake them up a little bit but they arent quite like the earlier mk2s or mk1s which are a bit lighter.

Whats your budget? What are you lookin to do? Just putt about or u wanna turn it into a rocket ship?

Garth

just a putt abount daily. ive never owned a vw before. :)

Mk2 would be a lot less headaches. They arent all rusty and the digifant injection system is simple/reliable. A bit more civilised as well. Still have that small euro car feel that brings a smile to ya dial when you chuck it into a couple corners.

mk1 is a more lovely car imo, but mk2 will be more realistic.
here's some of the detail on the car
"Mk2 1986 5 door. Import.
Has big bumpers and late model bodykit, Mk3 Brakes, Rear Disks, Early stripy GTI interior.
Engine is ABF 2L EFI, runs a full Cupra wiring loom with imobilizer defeated and utilising original Mk2 clocks and key.
Has Mk3 A/C setup and power steer.
Registered in NSW until October 2010.
Comes with 16" x 7 Borbets with stretched tyres, although a couple of them need replacing
Is slightly lowered with Random Spring Kit.
Looking for $5k as is.
Goes hard, no issues."

The car above is not very original but would be an absolute hoot to drive! the 16v ABF engine is such a sweet thing and loves to rev unlike the 8v variants. Makes a good noise with a decent intake as well.

That engine was never sold in a mk2 golf though. So im not sure how that works in NSW registration wise. Maybe something to look into. I think there is a loophole given its an import.

Not a cheap car but a bargain for what it is.

You'll find alot of fake gtis out there and for sum reason a real one will cost the earth, its more hype than anything else " oh look i have a gti". Here in aus everyone wants a gti over in uk gtis are everywhere, people buy them strip them and convert back to a early bumpered 76 models (early golfs are hard to get cause of rust issues). In my opinion is a cleaner classic look and very popular its the way im going with my car, steering away from the gti look and my car is far from a gti these days anyways it used to be a carbon copy of a 83 campaign.

If you find a late model genuine imported gti you won't have rust issues with it, my mate has a genuine 83 mk1 campaign gti and the amount of rust proofing on it is bloody amazing!!!! It came to aus in the late 80s driven daily by a lady, never parked in a shed and not a spec of rust on the thing. Honestly if you find a gti that is reasonably priced it will most likely be a heap of crap most mk1s are cheap first cars for people and not really looked after i have been told they where available for sale here, so you rock up to vw with money they will get it for you. There was a couple that raced at barthurst but everyone has there own story.

To me the advantages of a gti really ball down to 3 things, a nice interior and a 1.8l injected engine and decent brakes, to built a fake gti is relativity easy may still become a little expensive but very doable you'll soon learn there no such thing as a budget mk1.

Couple tips to built a fake here in AUS.
*Find a decent 2door mk1 golf rolling shell is ok (respray it)
*Buy a 85 - 93 mk1 cabriolet with black interior 90% the same as gti with 1.8l gti engine, also gti brakes ( strip it and put everything in the rolling 2door loom aswell)
*Browse ebay/vw forums for early twin headlight grill, gti tail lights, plastic bumpers, A pilar plastics, wheel arch trims and badges.

Thats a very breif description but the results look like this.

This is how my car was built i no longer run the 1.8l but you get the idea mine started as a 76 ls upgraded to 83 gti spec and now is being put back to 1976 looks on the outside but still gti inside >D

I will also say with owning an older VW, esp a MK2, you gotta be prepared to work in it and learn to maintain it.

You kinda have to earn your stripes and really love it to keep it going. Otherwise you will wanna drive it off a cliff.

When talking MK1 full stops are optional (and my schooling wasn't the best) :D

Just to add a piece, even though a mk2 is a great car they don't come in a 2 door in Aus, most people that want a mk1 (especially a gti) generally want it to be a 2 door. Thats where this problem goes full circle and back to square one does it really have to be a gti?? thats the question you have to ask yourself. :D

Well, let's see. The Mk1 GTI debuted in 1976, the 205 GTi in the mid 80s. Almost a full decade after Volkswagen gave the world the GTI concept you'd expect Peugeot have had the time to work out how to make their car more fun than a car that was no longer being sold. :p

Since the 205 you've got the 306 and then what? While VW lost their way, too, they also got two generations of GTI out the door before starting to lose the plot. They have also had the decency to come came back and put things right with the Mk5/Mk6.

Haha, I love the old Pugs, though, but I just had to return serve. The 306 still looks sex.

Well said Lima. My mates 407 wagon, the gearbox oil overheats and the car makes you stop and wait for it to cool down. What a POS.

When I was 13 I saw Peter (old bloke with grey hair, passed not too long ago) drive a gold 306 GTI 6 on tellie and I thought to myself "When I'm 30, I will buy myself on of those"

Look where I am now, in a diesel and working on a car with 20 yr old suspension ;-)

i still miss our old 306 XSI. best Pug we have ever owned. if you could handle the shit ergonomics the 206s were brilliant little cars and i still consider them to be the last great Pugs.

what are Peugeot doing now? well they dropped the luke warm 308 XTS turbo that we bought and are introducing sexy numbers like this..

I like the old Peugeot 205 gtis. The newer ones are to space aged for me, i know the mk1 was the original hot hatch and all, but Peugeot did put the hot hatch on steroids in 1984 and won everything it entered, group B rally championship, daka rally and pike peak hill climb. They did build 400 for street use, this is one of them

But if we are just looking for something with gti attached to it, i used to have 2 Suzuki swift gtis before i went to the mk1. These days its hard to find a decent one, the years and people haven't treaded them well. Anything that is decent has a stupid body kit on it, one of mine was turbo and the other was converted to a 1.7l but thats another story. Anyways they are a bit of fun and cheap to.

What this is all about is either having access to 10K that you never want to ever see again, or waiting for a car to come to you through divine intervention.

There are heaps of cars around for 5K, but by no mean should you consider them to be sorted.

Liam and I have both bought cars that we thought were well finalised for between 5-10K but by the time they are brought to the standard that (at least I expect) you will spend the 10K.

I'm not going to be allowed to get another toy car, so I am going to have to keep spending to make this one that I have into what I want it to be.

BTW, there is a 3 door MK1 on VWW for 7-8K that I would say is probably good value. It is in Tas, but the owner is renowned for going over the top in the restoration stakes (it is nicely modified with the 16V engine also).

Goodluck!

Yeah the GTI swifts where an awesome car in there day!! Lots of fun!

i remember my boss had one about 15 years, a true pocket rocket. redlined at 8000rpm and you could pull 75mph (120km/h?) in second. stupid amounts of fun...
