I have a broken heater core in the MK2. I tried pulling out the heater box without pulling the dash out but it's a royal PITA so I bit the bullet.

and here is the offending heater box. Note the 20 year old foam virtually non-existant? I gotta replace that too.

Fark, commendments on attempting it yourself! My balls weren't big enough for me to try it on my Mk3, so I palmed it off to my mechanic (who now hates my car )

Haha, it's stock yo. I think it's a drain to the rain tray.

Well I know I'm saving over $800 doing it myself.

It's really like a lego set this car.

Haha, isn't that what your brother in law is for?

About 2 hours.

Was thinking that. So spacious! Who needs a tacho?

Hopefully I will get it all back in on the weekend, just in time for winter. It's hard driving it at night with my coat on :-D

Good work! Any tips or pit falls to look out for?

I've been putting off replacing my heater core and dash for a while now. Time to grow some balls and get on with it :)

I need to start a backyard mechanics business, oh, wait, hold on... ;)

MK1 takes about 20 mins go to woah. Therefore MK1>MK2...

Well the heater core is back together with doors re-foamed and it's all clipped back in.

Connecting and putting the dash in now, ergh.

Just try not to lose anything and bag 'n' label all the screws, nuts, bolts.

Unclipping the heater box from the A/C is a royal PITA. Be patient.

Also be careful unclipping the blue control line from underneath the heater box. My clip is bent and I'm trying to re-shape it from a blurry photo.

Well at least in a MK2 it won't leak, being freezing or hot in the cabin, see stuff at night and stop. So...

Haha, I'll race your over engineered, heavy MK2 any day for slips. :P

(and i think the above mentioned faults add character)

Progress.

The heater box is in after losing a bolt and two nuts. Slowly figuring out the Chinese puzzle that is the wiring...

So it's all back in. Now I need to figure out how to add the heater hoses in the engine bay. Anyone got an AUS MK2 they wanna take a photo of the heater hose setup in the engine bay?

Cheers

After finding out I don't need those old school hoses with the bleeder valves I got a MK2 heater hose off Brian but he told me you can get the feed hose locally. Found some old heater hose in the garage and it fit nicely.

Other than the temp control cable clip not holding properly it all works. The heater is brilliant, gives out heat super early unlike my MK5.

Only think not working is the MFA switch. I checked it with an older stalk and it won't switch it either. It must be a wire loose or the cluster has an issue. Hope not!
