Hi,
I was recently asked how I activated Voice Command on my RCD510 so thought I would share.

At the start of the year, I retrofitted a 9W7 (Version C) to my GTI. Below is an image of the BT controller in VCDS. For those who were factory installed, you many want to check yours is similar build etc as I know there are a few BT kits which were/are installed.

It's a pretty simple code change using VCDS. The option is under the 16-Steering Wheel Module.
Your change:
Byte 1 to 9A. Or tick the box next to BIT 3.

After you do this, you should be able to now use the "Push to Talk" button on your steering wheel. The voice commands are limited to the BT functions like dialing contacts etc and some other features. (if you say Help, she will tell you what commands are available).

Anyway hope this helps some of you. Again, its only if you have a BT 9w7 installed.
Cheers
Ian

so what exactly does voice command do, and is it something u use, or a gimmick?

That is awesome, can a dealer do this or only via VCDS?

Would love this option on my Golf R, anyone around Sydney possible to do this for me?

We have Ford sync and voice command on the wifes Fiesta. It is said to be one of the better units on the market but we never use it

Just unreliable and slow really.

That's what I thought, kinda like siri on the 4gs, I've never used it. Unless someone can demonstrate to me how it benefits me, then I think it's a gimmick

A little from column A, and a little from column B. But generally its very handy It just gives you full voice command/control over your BT/phone. So you dont have to fumble through the on screen display or MFD to find numbers, dial numbers etc. I use it all the time, and I dont have much problems with her understanding me.
If you do a search on youtube you can see what its all about.

Do you have a 9w7 BT kit installed? I can help if you do.

just had a look on youtube. viewed the radio changing ones, and it looks annoyingly slow and cumbersome. seems easier to just press the buttons rather than wait for the voice response.
i actually have the 9w7 bt, ill get derek at EA to code it up just to have a gander at it, but i still cant see the benefit

What do you want? The kit to read your thoughts? lol I like it because I have alot of contacts on my phone as its work/personal. So scrolling down a large list can take some time and distract you. Correct though it is quicker if its a contact on the main screen. Anyway I will post up a video in a sec.

i actually was hoping for star trek technology, where u can talk into it like the communicator and it responds accordingly. but i guess thats wishful thinking.
i actually dial on my iphone as i know the layout and it goes thru to the bt in the car.
and i understand scrolling thru the mfd can be a pain in the ass

hmm, interesting. actually seems decent now that u put that up.
but how do u get it to recognise obscure names? i noticed that "andrew walls" was repeated in a male voice and not the female one. is there setting up needed for that?

Thats my voice. You can add your own Voice Tags to specific contacts. Its no Star Trek computer, but its pretty good. ;)
I'm sure the guys with the RNS510 Voice command can vouch that its good too. I'm just surprised this feature isn't available to all VW customers, considering brands like Ford have it.

hey mate, any chance you could post a VCDS auto scan? Trying to get my RCD510 working with bluetooth 9WZ and looking for possible coding differences.
