I've started my mods slow as outlined in the thread but here's a wish list of mods I'd like to do:
Current
Replacement of paper filter with VWR Panel filter
Upgrade 17" Denver wheels to 18" MTM Bimoto wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 rubber
OSIR CF surround for shifter
OSIR Aluminium dead pedal footrest
Tint (35%)
Future
OSIR CF goodies for internal look
Bilstein PSS10
Break upgrade (maybe R32, or R20 or something else not sure)
Long Term (possibly after warranty)
APR Stg 1 tune
APR full exhaust
Reversing Camera and RNS510 upgrade
I'm sure I'll find other things that I will desire for my car, only time will tell >D

Don't tell me your thinking of swapping the G35 for a GTI Justin haha.
Oh and Nath, nice choice of colour ;). How much extra would it have cost to option the 18 telephone dials (forgot what they are called)? lol.

16-02-2010, 11:26 PM
The 18" Detroits, or Huffs, are a $1200 option, or over $3K for aftermarket, ouch.
Would have got them but I took a car from the first shipment and wanted Red with MDI so this was all there was, happy though and I can get some aftermarkets later if/when I decide and still keep the 17s for future resale :)

Yeah its the West Head road in the NP, goes on for around 12kms and all of it is pretty much that good. Only other traffic today was a heap of cyclist so I had it all to myself :)

Looks good Nath. What options did you get?
nath_mk6
03-03-2010, 10:01 PM
Thx Jig, all they had available was MDI, and I got them to add reverse sensors to account for my very small carpark at home.
Would've liked the RNS and 18" Huffs, but didnt want to wait 6 months so took what they had.
Going to get some new wheels and a tint at some point later this year though and then once some more non-OEM parts become available for the Mk6 I'll look at those, really like the look of 10d and SUGAs carbon bits and pieces just a shame that OSIR wont have the mk6 range until the US summer
Patience, dear boy!
The OSIR kit will be worth the wait.
Hey, didn't you have to finish your house first! LOL
nath_mk6
03-03-2010, 11:25 PM
Lol yeah I know... and yes I need to wait at least until they start building, but then I also need to wait till we sell our other block of land too.
Anyone want to buy a 1700sqm tidal waterfront block in Yowie Bay?

Yeah I am a little worried lol...
I actually just got put onto this forum by Nath's post on golfmkvi.com
All different forums have their benefits though.
Dont think the golfmkvi.com Aussie subforum is gaining much traction.
May aswell keep it local.

Okay so I've started down the long road of mods, starting off very small and slowly to begin with.
On Friday I ordered the following goodies from OSIR US;
http://www.osirusa.com/images/395/VGTI-ORST-R-01-395.JPG
I think the footwell looks a little odd with just the two pedals and the plain black plastic footrest, so hopefully this will improve the look.
http://www.osirusa.com/images/395/VGTI-SPARH-CF-01-395.JPG
My first piece of CF, a gloss surround for the shifter, I hope to match this to the CF for the stero and CC units when they're released.
200
And after some thought I've placed and order with Ian @ Rennenhaus for the VWR Panel Filter as a first under the hood mod.
So nothing too flash, but these are my first mods to my GTI, and are in fact my first mods to any car, so a mini-milestone for me >D
elisiX
07-03-2010, 11:03 PM
Some good choices Nath.
Be sure to stick that CF paneling down well. Itll start to lift if you dont.
Ian is a great guy and i'm sure you're dealing with him have been smooth as silk.
nath_mk6
07-03-2010, 11:07 PM
Thanks, yeah I also bought the glue (or whatever they call it) from OSIR for that exact reason ;)
Ian seems nice, yet to meet him as I missed the last GTG, just waiting on his confirmation email and its all done, got the first response within 30mins which is insane :)

Mods already! I have even more appreciation for your car now that I've driven one! Lucky you! :)
Nice GTI! Plates look familiar - I think I live upstairs from you in the same apartment block! LOL.
What are the chances! 2 Nath in the same block. Both drive Golfs!
Haha - I'm an imposter though. Used to be a VW freak, now onto MX5s :) Sir_Camel is corrupting me into R32 territory however.

I drove a MK6 GTI and they are very nice..
nath_mk6
16-03-2010, 09:17 PM
So I've driven the car a few times since installing the filter (easy install too as Ian said, 8 screws and that was it :) ) and well I can't say I can tell the difference in power, given the claimed torque improvement, so I doubt there is any real increas, but I have to say under heavy acceleration, and in car parks, you can really hear a difference. The sound is richer with a nice deep throaty growl where there was only a small one before. O and the DSG burp under acceleration sounds so much more aggresive in the cabin.
Overall I'd say definately worth the $110, a nice simple mod that gives the car a much richer sound and as pointed out by Justin allows much more air to get to the turbo, something that can only be good for it >D
On another note, have to say the fuel economy of the car continues to surprise me, with over a thrid of a tank left in the car I have done 500km (combination of city and spirited driving) so I should end up exceeding 600km easy to this tank :)

^ sounds like a good mod.. At the moment i'm running a K&N panel filter, I felt throttle response was improved marginally. This one seems to be better designed than the K&N.

Haha, yeah you might but I just don't think Tendy can... lol
Okay so I got 18" wheels from Chermany, thats all I'm saying..
Prob be a let down to everyone when they are finally revealed ;)
O and I got my quote from tirerack for the F1s, US$176 per wheel, but US$355.29 for shipping :( ends up over the magic $1K mark. Going to see what the local guy will do them for, don't mind the potential AU$1306 with duty and GST, but if I can get for close to this from our local guy then I may just get them from him :)

But seriously love to just need to see when we are both available, or are you coming to the next GTG that might present an opportunity for a few quick shots?
Thanks Burgs. Definitely need to take you up on the offer!

remember we will be driving most of the time and stops will be short for the most part so a proper shoot may be something we can organise at a later date
True. And perhaps another GTG can be planned specifically with a photoshoot as the main aim?

Cheers French man. I was looking at springs last night as I don't want to splash wads of cash again anytime soon. Found some H&R for under $200 from the states but not sure on two things:
1. What sort of quality the h&r are and which set would suit the car, and
2. More importantly what the wife would do to me/say if I went ahead and got them......

I really do like the new MTM wheels (by the way Frenchie apparently they're not forged, only 19s and up are)
Few little scratches here and there which is frustrating, but not much I can do about it now I guess...

So as some might know 10d has been kind enough to loan me his Bilstein shocks and H&R springs (H&R Cup set I think) to give me a feeling for the height and feel of the car on them, can't thank him enough he has definately gone above and beyond for me in this one.
Work was done at Top One, 10d's other home, and they ripped through the change in around 1.5hrs, excellent work there.

back is a little deceptive as in the shot I still have the OEM springs etc in the boot!
As you can see it looks really good, very happy with the outcome and the ride is stiffer but not overly so, already noticed that the car corners flatter and you can notice the reduction in body roll as well.
Cant that 10d enough, took him to lunch in the City, but still owe him I'd say. Will run with these for a while to really bed them in and the probably go down a similar route myself in a few months and return them to him.

Tendy must have big fingers, but probably just the angle of the shot that makes it look more than one finger gap. I found mine looked pretty low from eye height, and was slightly less than a parallel finger.

Don't be sorry it wasn't a problem, 10d has similar issues and missed it too. Frenchie can certainly dish it out, and I'm certain that it was tame to bring us into it, so it can only get more painful as we go on, right now my arms, shoulders and lower legs are hurting like hell!

Lol, yeah had to spread the disease around!
They do balance the car out well little changes like this, I may look at some of the future OSIR mods as they come out for the mk6 as well given how well these came together. Have to say though that the dead pedal was a pain to install with the screws being allen keys and the angle you have to get into the footwell at. I need to pull it out and attach the tread pattern better as they have it attached with sticky tape and it has a little movement in them when you apply pressure. But it looks good and isnt that much of an issue, will fix it long term.
So have you ordered them yet?
G-rig
01-05-2010, 11:19 PM
Yeah, i think i'll try a few layers of scotch foam double sided tape and see how secure it is. I still have some screws the dead pedal Gulfstream11 makes on MKV so may even cut them and stick them on, or just screw it down. Doesn't look right without anything though.

Yeah I agree. When I installed my OSIR deadpedal, the angle was so awkward. I had to pull the whole plastic cover as the footrest is part of a plastic mould. The allen key screws were rubbish IMO and the hole I used to drill was JUST big enough for the screws to just be able to be pushed in without actually screwing it down. Thus, I drilled a hole a tad bigger than the actual screw. Went to bunnings and bought some M4.0 x 20mm bolts and nuts and secured the bolts with the nuts and its a much firmer and tighter fit.
Agreed with the sticky tape. Whats the go? I thought it would at least be properly glued. For something that looks quality when installed, I was quite surprised to see it being attached by sticky tape? I bonded mine up and got some industrial adhesive so no more sticky tape!!!
Did you get some more 3M double stick tape when you installed your OSIR SPA GT carbon surround? I initially installed mine with the normal very thin double stick tape but it got a bit loose after so I put on nice thick strips of double tape . It's now sturdy and not going anywhere.
Anyway, its looking tops nath! Only thing for me is is that the Jetta didnt come factory with the GTI stainless steel accel and brake pedals. So currently I just have an OSIR dead pedal with factory plastic brake/accel pedals, which looks like crap. On the lookout for the GTI items so it wont look as rubbish. Hahah :D
nath_mk6
02-05-2010, 12:00 AM
Yeah I used a power drill with the philips head attachment after drilling some small holes in place, the pedal is fixed nicely just needs the plastic interts securing to the metal better than sticky tape.
As for the CF surround Stephen, I used the OSIR supplied bonding agent (extra cost) which didnt come with everything but I managed to get it to work, the applied double sided tape looked bad so did away with it, the bonding agent should have it down permanantly once cured overnight.
MK, comon its only AU$200 or there abouts I'm sure those deep pockets of yours can stretch considering all the goodies you've purchased recently.
The deadpedal finished the footwell off perfectly IMO, as it looks misbalanced with only the two, shame it doesnt come like that from the factory.

Great stuff Nath. Definite mod for me!
I'm also curious about any similarities to an MK5 install.
I've been feeling around my wheel and cant find the same points to release the airbag.
nath_mk6
22-05-2010, 10:55 PM
The removal of the airbag is the same, a little harder from what Tendy explained, probably some minor changes in the design, but it comes off eventually.
Jay the releases are Right and Left side of the wheel, you need to turn 90deg each way to find them.
Inside though is a whole different story. Basically the silver trim that borders the buttons on either side is one piece, this is attached via two torque screws and required some gentle persuasion to come out, also need to release the plugs and remember which goes where. From there remove the paddles as per the mk5 change, torque screw release and again some persuasion to remove each paddle, then disasemble the paddle (dont lose the spring!) and add those parts to the back of the new paddles, reverse everything to assemble.
The trick on putting it back in, aside from all the puching and shoving of trim etc, is to make sure you slip the horn cable back in the right place. The horn cord comes from the middle of the wheel and has a small felt cover over the end of it, it slips over a small metal spike at the bottom RHS of the airbag section. If the felt is not on it then the horn will sound continuously, and if its not on the spike it wont sound at all. You have to be very careful when clipping the airbag back in as it the horn cable falls off easily.
It took about 30-45 mins once we got the cover off, and then add another 20mins to work out how to fix the damn horn issue! All up a little over an hour, one of those things though, do it once and you can eaily do it the next time.
Things you need, a mirror, small screwdriver and torque screw, and lots of light.
nath_mk6
22-05-2010, 10:57 PM
Something I noticed too, the RHS stalk on the Mk6 is chunkier than the Mk5, this means you can feel it almost touching the back of your right hand when using the paddles, not and issue really but if you have very big hands it would prob cause issues.

What was the issue with your right paddle? do they get a bit spongy after a while or not fitted quite right?
Just want to make sure they are basically as good as OEM.

30-05-2010, 12:30 PM
Hey Greg, it works fine, just need to adjust the tension of the torque screw, we loosened them a bit as when it was fully tight they were too stiff and barely moved, the right one is great but I need to either slightly loosen or tighten the right one. It works fine its just a little mushy, the left on gives a nice soft click feel all the time whereas the right one does most of the time but if I use it high on the paddle its a little mushy.

so tears are in order, as some people already know I guttered one of my wheels recently and have been looking to get them fixed ever since. Most of the recommended repairers are way out of my local area and I have no real way of getting to them so I thought I'd give the Wheel Man a go as they come to you and have some pretty good references.
Here are some quick shots of the damage:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DC20tvood7M/TBMglrF3YCI/AAAAAAAAAjI/wVV9732onpE/s720/DSC06187.JPG
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DC20tvood7M/TBMgnkNb8iI/AAAAAAAAAjM/J6jDp_243FQ/s720/DSC06188.JPG
this was essentially the damage in about 4 spots around the rim, makes me cry just looking at it.
Well the wheel man came around today and had a bash at repairing the wheel, whilst they removed the damage, well the colour coding didnt work, to the point that well, I think the wheel is ruined. Don't get me wrong the wheel man guy did a good job with repairing the damage but after 3.5hrs he gave up on the colour, just couldnt make it work. Now I'm quite sad about the whole thing....

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DC20tvood7M/TBMgspVbEGI/AAAAAAAAAjk/_ZyeBAUbLkQ/s720/DSC06197.JPG
Now I need to decide the future of my wheels and the whole direction I wanted to take with my car as short of buying a replacement wheel (which would be bloody $$) I dont think I can fix it....

Well.. I can think of one solution for you... Powder coat the lot black :)
Well you can try Virgin Wheels. They can remachine the wheels and clear coat them again. It cost $150 per wheel from memory to do that.
That sucks Nath!! You can get them machined! I did my C63 wheels once before!!

Sorry to hear that Nath, was it just one wheel affected?
Hopefully a good place should be able to match it, otherwise go gun metal.
(Would ordering another wheel be cheaper than repairing? That way you could have a spare??).

have to quote the repair, but one wheen would prob be near to $1K.....

Just saw this - sorry to read Nath - not good mate.
I would think it should not cost $1k to repair (have the wheel machined) but who knows. What's the cost to replace the wheel?
I think you have to expect these things to happen mate - it's a shame but its part of owning such nice things.
nath_mk6
15-06-2010, 10:58 PM
yeah its not $1K to repair, probably around that to replace. spoke to a guy today and they can machine the face but the colour match cant be done, something to do with the polish that was applied after machining and prior to a clear coat.
machining the wheel is around $250, getting a quote for a replacement wheel..... sigh

hey Ed, I'm holding off at the moment till the wife allows me to spend the cash, I'll also lose the wheel for a few days when I have it machined.
that was probably me, heading down King Georges on the way back home from meetings out at Moorebank, who knew that disposing of excess stock could be so expensive!
Have you tried speaking to Thomas from Ramspeed Nath? They use some wheel guy that does porsche, ferrari wheels all the time at that shop and sounded really good. Try wheelrepairs.com.au as well. Work Wheels highly recommends them and that is the place I am taking my VS-XX to get refurbished. Have seen their work on a Lambo Murcielago and its just amazing. They are based on Botany so should be closer to your part of the world.

thanks Jig, thats who I'm going to use, dropped in there for a chat just prior to the VW driver training, very unassuming little shop, missed it the first time. I spoke to Thomas but that was about a replacement which is cost prohibitive at this time sadly.

Those wheels rawk.
I'd be tempted to fit my GTI with them also but I fear of having to replace them if they get damaged rather than a simple repair. :(

Okay so after a short period of DIY and some driving is circles I have a fully functioning RNS-510 installed and working, who'd have thought I could do that!
Anyway here's a few shots of the DIY.
So the trim comes off pretty easily, I did manage to break a couple of the clips (damn) but it still all fits together nicely with no rattles.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4079/4829591658_68f2089868.jpg
From there it's pretty easy from there just a matter of removing the 4 screws as with the Mk5 change out done by Cam recently.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4828983837_cd5fa02a90.jpg
With the unit out a simple disconnection of the cables and we're ready to install the new unit.
I've read a few options for mounting the aerial, I decided to remove the upper vents by removing the screws shown to get it as high as possible.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4078/4829001051_d3e1d610ee.jpg
The next two shots show the placement of the aerial, in these shots its on the rhs in the airvent section of the dash, however it didn't fit so I moved it to the centre line and bingo.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4829597742_7c07672d82.jpg
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4081/4828989373_75496d695f.jpg
So with the aerial placement complete its just a matter of plugging the cables back in and dropping the unit back in place.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4097/4828991391_6e0336d2c6.jpg
After a quick test the trim clips back into place and bingo, one DIY RNs510 install that even I could do.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4094/4828993243_a29168c567.jpg
Very happy with the unit, came well packed and in quick time (posted Tuesday arrived Monday after some Customs inspections) I'd be happy to recommend purchasing the unit off ebay if the same seller has more.
nath who did you end up buying it through??
