Hello all,

Just picked up my mk4 gti and was looking through the handbook as I was after what oil to use when changing the engine oil and only found a VW part number and not the viscosity of the oil itself.

Car has done 164xxx k's so any recommendations?

I'm aware that I can ring any vw dealer and ask what viscosity oil to use but if anyone has a bit more of an idea since the engine isn't brand new anymore, much appreciated.

I have read 10-40 is the general oil to use

Cheers

Aaron

Look for oil that's approved for VW 502.00/505.00 standard. This is the oil the 1.8T prefers. They come in a few viscosity ratings but they hover around the 0W30 to 10W40 range. I use Motul's 8100 X-cess which is rated at 5W40. It comes in at $75 for a 5L bottle so it isn't cheap (I change my oil and filter every 5000km) but it's a very worthy investment for peace of mind and good drivability - the car just revs so cleanly with fresh oil. Cheapest oil I've found that's VW 502.00/505.00 approved is Shell's Helix HX7 (10W40) coming in at half the price of the Motul.

Cheers, ended up going a penrite 5-40 so I'l see how that goes. I also change oil and filter every 5k so I'l take the advice on the motul. I'm guessing for that price it's fully synthetic?

Yeah it's fully synth. I hear lots of good feedback with the current range of Penrite oils.
