Hello my name is Allan and i'm a MK2aholic :icon_neutral:

Bit of background, i'm an Englishman abroad. This was my pride & joy that i sold to fund my move to Australia;

http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/allan_mk2-1.jpg

It was a 1990 8v GTI with coilovers, BBS RM's and some engine mods >D

This is my current 'project'. I've had it for about a year now, this is how it looked when i bought it;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/Photo630.jpg
Its a 1984 (Typ 19) GT UK import so its a very early model. Under the bonnet is a mighty 1600cc carb motor with a good old fashioned manual choke.
The body has a few dents and dings but is totally straight and has no major rust issues. The paint is a bit shabby in places but overall its very good for a 26 year old.
First order of business was to remove the nasty rubbery stuff left behind when the previous owner had removed the side trim;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/DSCF0063.jpg
After a week of nights on the floor of the garage with some eucalyptus oil and a carefully wielded stanley blade (and some beer and music) it was removed;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/DSCF0084.jpg
Next i repainted the arch spats, windscreen surround and wiper arms.
The thing that attracted me to this car in the first place was the colour. So with a bit of elbow grease and some polish i gave it a bit of a detail;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0008.jpg
the paint came up really well for a 26 year old car. Next I swapped the grille for a single light version;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0312.jpg
For some reason the passenger side door card was a different colour to the others, being grey in a brown interior it looked a bit shite. But as part of the deal I had a spare set of door cards. Problem was they were blue :rolleyes:
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0146.jpg
So I retrimed them in 'houndstooth' tweed to match the retro brown interior;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0150.jpg
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0158.jpg
I had some material left over so i went a bit crazy with a staple gun and did the parcel shelf;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0178.jpg
and gearshift boot;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0318.jpg
and to finish it off I bought a slightly dodgy wooden steering wheel on ebay for $10. Just got to fit it :p
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0316.jpg

Mechanically it needed some bits fixing to get it through rego so I was using it as a daily for a few months until i took it to see a local specialist (Adam at VA Garage in Southport, if you live on the Gold Coast i'd highly recommend his services) who presented me with a list of defects that need fixing. Worst of all was the suspension, the dampers were gone, the top mounts were gone, and the bushes were shot. So it is now fully poly bushed and is running AP coilovers;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0402.jpg
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0404.jpg
As ever when modifying cars problems crop up. I wanted to lower the car as far as i could but the part of the car i like the least, the wheels, had other ideas.
They are 16x7 Advanti Racing wheels with ET40 which means they won't clear the shocks if i lower it any further. So here is how it sits now;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0311.jpg
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0310.jpg
Once i have replenished my savings a little a new set of wheels are in order. This is a quick photoshop of the look i am trying to achieve;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/lownfatssr_edited-1.jpg
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_00062_edited-1.jpg

So thats where i'm at. Next up i'm thinking of re-trimming the door cards again and the headliner.
I use this as my daily so I can't really do too much to it at the moment but in the long run i'd love to put a 1.8 16v engine in it >D

Awesome we need more old skool on here. Your old car looked so clean, must have been at least a little bit heartbreaking to let it go.

So nice to see someone give a bit of love to an old car though. Super inspiring, makes me want to get my hands dirty!

It was a bit hard, it was an awesome car. The bloke who bought it put a VR6 in it and then wrote it off a couple of months later.

It's a weird colour, some people see it as grey, some see it as brown.

Yes they are!! They're aren't many in Australia, less than 500 apparently. :eek:I think my car is the second oldest!

As for the rear view mirror, it's amazing what you can do with some white paint and a sharpie :p

Top Work Allan.

I just did the heater core on mine, dash out and all. After all my efforts all I will get is hot air in winter, what a let down, haha!

Maybe you could help me out. After putting the dash back in I have 2 orphaned wires.

Cheers mate, much appreciated. Said it before but i'll say it again, just waiting 'till i get some new wheels and can drop the suspension a bit more. >D

Can't help with the wire from the glovebox but is the other one part of the fusebox? If everything is working then i wouldn't worry about them, can't tell you how many errant wires & connections are floating around in mine :lol:

Have you got a workshop manual? I've got a haynes manual on PDF i can email you.

Might, might be up for sale soon.......:(

Busy weekend ahead, gotta fix the handbrake handle (which means taking the passenger seat out), replace the clutch cable, replace speedo cable, change an engine mount and a gearbox mount.

Never done any of this stuff before, but it can't be that hard........

So after spending the weekend fixing a few bits, tightening others and giving it a bit of a polish i've decide to keep the little bugger. Plus after looking around for a possible replacement, there aren't any other cars i'd want than a good ol' MK2 Golf.

I've got a head full of ideas and come tax return time an empty credit card. Dangerous combination :) Watch this space......

Since i've decided to keep it a plan has been forming in my head,
New wheels are the priority so i can sort out the stance properly. This is how it sits atm;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0936.jpg
I have been teasing myself with photoshop. I really want to get some BBS RS's in either 16" and tuck them or in 15x7/8 with a bit of poke. What i'm hoping for (very rough p'shop skills);
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/blackbbs.jpg
Also gonna do some other little exterior touches and maybe some pin-striping.

Then i'm gonna redo the interior, what i'm aiming for;
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/2413743182_d42f8f9d61.jpg
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/2413735270_7b2212d2a8.jpg
And lastly i want to tidy up the engine bay.

Wish me luck......

As the wheels are gonna take a few weeks to arrive i got busy with some rattle cans;
Re-painted the bumpers. One of my pet hates is faded bumpers, i've tried all the usual bumper black products but they never last more than a few months. So i bit the bullet and bought some satin black paint and got busy with the masking tape. Sorry for the crappy pics, i have a very shit camera & basic skills.

http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0961.jpg
Sorry, no after shots because the rest of the car is still dirty.

While i was in the painting mood I did the engine too. After some scrubbing with de-greaser and some cunning use of old sheets & newspaper, i got busy with some silver paint >D
http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0963.jpg
And after tidying some some wires & painting the hood catch to match (nice rhyme) it looks like this;

http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc335/walshy1981/100_0967.jpg

http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/100_0986.jpg
Tomorrow, i'm going to get busy with some masking tape and gloss black paint :D Polish the polished bits & paint the grey bits.

unfortunatley tyres will have to wait a few weeks. My rego is due, the misses rego is due, its her birthday and the electric bill just arrived :rolleyes:

Cheers for the support fella's much appreciated :D considering how slow this 'project' is moving.

Spent most of the weekend masking up the shinny bits and it made me realize how well made these wheels are. The detailing on them is spot on.
I almost gave up on them and got some cheap replica's because i could have had them sooner. Sooo glad i waited now, it's going to be a unique MK2 in Aus, a Typ 19 on Type 5's.

Cheers mate, i love em too :D The right is painted but not polished. They look good from a distance but there are a few marks close up. I'm not gonna go nuts and mirror polish them, don't want them to 'blingy' just tidy them up a bit more.

I used engine enamel rattle can paint. I figured enamel would be the hardest wearing paint. I was going to do a couple of coats of clear but it turns out rattle can clear is more trouble than its worth. So i just put 3 coats on of black.

I've been looking into DIY polishing and i am in for a long tedious process using ascending grades of sand paper. Starting with 800 grit up to 2000. Then some metal polish for protection.

Nice, what tyres did you decide to go with ? A little stretch ?

It has been a massive pain trying to find the right tyres! Ended up going for Falken 195/50's. No stretch just a flush side wall, higher profile than i'd like but they will give a bit more comfort.
I ideally wanted 185/50's but unless i wanted a either a cheap & nasty or mega expensive tyre that was a no go.
The 16's on it at the mo have 205/40's and they are very unforgiving so a little comfort will be nice!

Mr Scruff

http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/100_0999.jpg

There's still a bit left on the coilovers but its as low as it will go & remain driveable, even had to do a little ghetto rolling of the arches :p
The ATS's are about 2/3 the weight of the old wheels and it is soooo much nicer to drive.
Sorry for the lack of pics, camera died :rolleyes: i'll get more once it's charged & i've washed the car.

Now that the coilovers have settled in at their new height some rubbing issues meant the arch liners have come out but the fronts are still rubbing slightly on full lock so a little more arch rolling is needed. If i can roll out a bit more it can go lower :D as there is this much left on the front coils;

I've decided that i'm gonna get it as low as possible so some arch surgery is needed. Which means Its going to look shiiite for a while.
So the only solution is too change the look of the car by adding some plastic arches, sill & door trims. It will end up looking something like this;

Dropped the front down another 10mm and there is a lot more tyre - arch interaction :D Will get some better pics up soon of how it sits now.

Bit of a dilemma...I've hammered the arches out far enough to allow me to lower it all the way down without rubbing issues & it looks wicked, tucking tyre all the way around.
Problem is with it that low i can't get it down my driveway and into the garage, which means leaving it on the street :( Not happy doing that as i have no lock nuts on the wheels. For the time being it's raised a bit.

So do I;
A) Keep it at a 'sensible' height
B) Drop it & drive around in probably the lowest MK2 in Aus. But park it on the street.
C) Drop it & drive around in probably the lowest MK2 in Aus and carry around wooden ramps in the car to negotiate my driveway & speedbumps.

Answers on a postcard....

B) is a pain in the ass, my ass was dragging everywhere, had to take caution everywhere, hence the modest lift for my wagon.

C) Thought is there but are you really going to bother ?

A) Best of both world, I m sure you should still be able to attain a good ride height.

D) Bag it

Air would be great but would bring a world of notched chassis & raised turrets, maybe when i embark on a money no object make over.
I want to move, but the misses doesn't, we live by the beach & rent is cheap so it's all good. :p

I've reached an A/B mix with a bit of trial & error and flukely got it low enough to tuck half the tyres all round and get it looking gooood but i can still just get out of the driveway with just a dash of chin scraping. Need a couple of phone books to get in the garage though :D

That's the joy of the older cars, they're like lego, anything can be fixed with (or by) a spanner.

What issues are you having? Rubbing on full lock or all the time. Any decent body shop would be able to roll the arch lips back.

Issue - large wheels, slammed and no room with fenders. Yep will roll front fenders, rears well they have been shaved, along with rubber section cut out but would loved to pump the guards. What I was referring to yesterday was fender extensions/fibreglassing

It's really not that bad, you've just got to find the right height, it's trial & error really. Mine would be lower still if it wasn't for my driveway, speed bumps aren't an issue, they are lower than you'd think. The biggest problem is steep slopes, but you learn to avoid them.

A lot of people think because their car grounds out or scrubs on lowered suspension they'll never be able to go really low but you'd be amazed with the ride heights you can get away with.

If you just want to get in your car & drive it, it's not woth it. Personally i enjoy the challenge & problem solving needed to drive low daily. Also you learn to 'read' the road & pay attention a lot more. It does get tiring bouncing along the road, avoiding obstacles & the law but when your car looks the goods it's worth it :D

I am seriously considering selling the ATS's to get some wheels with better sizes/offsets, get it down a touch more...

Haven't updated this in while, mainly because i've not done much to the car. had a hectic few months with the baby and recently moving house.
But last week i got back into it by finally fixing the front arches.
With the help of a big hammer and some filler i smoothed them out. They are currently in primer as finding the correct paint is proving tough.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/100_1612.jpg
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/100_1609.jpg
The edges are a bit gnarly but, i think they came out pretty well considering it was my first attempt at any sort of body work. Best of all though, no scrubbing!!

Next up is the engine, Iwas toying with the idea of fitting a replacement but i've since decided to keep the original motor which means i've got a laundry list of parts to order. Including a new radiator, water pump, coil, fuel hoses and various seals.
On top of all that i going to replace the tyres with some lower profile jobbies and upgrade the brakes. Also on the list of things to do is sorting the suspension and stance with some spacers.
It's gonna be a hectic few month as i want it all done before the Oxenford Show on the 2nd October.
In the mean time here she is in its new home. Bigger house (happy wife) smaller garage (compromise by me);

I had a seriously lucky escape over the weekend. My radiator finally let go, ironically when i was going to take it to get fixed.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/100_1781.jpg

Furtunatley I just got it home before any damage was done to the engine. This meant i had to replace the rad myself.
It was relatively easy to do the swap the only tough part was getting at a bolt which was blocked by the cross member.
After i'd removed the old rad i drained it and it only had about 200ml of fluid left, down from 5L!!

Radiator out and half the front end dismantled
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/100_1780.jpg
New rad in;
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/000_0001-1.jpg

This is why i love old cars. I've never tried anything like this before but by taking my time and working methodically I did the whole job in around 4 hours :) I didn't even need any fancy tools either only a screw driver, a socket set and a trusty hammer.

After re-asmbeling the front end i tried my old 4 lamp grill on,
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/walshy1891/000_0002.jpg
Much prefer the 2 lamp but it did make my think i might try a bit of Bozo/Rat look and run it with 3 lamps and make a mock oil cooler with pipes running through the lamp hole.

Next up is a replacement alternator and new brakes. I think i'll let the mechanic do that....

Hopefully i'll be getting some new lower profile tyres this week if i can get a quote out of my local Bob Jane.

"The size 185/45R15 is not correct for your vehicle. We would recommend a 185/55R15 or 195/50R15." :rolleyes: :mad:

HI Allan,
Unfortunately we cannot fit a 185/45R15 to your vehicle due to the large difference in overall diameter which is outside the legal requirements.
Please let me know if you want us to supply with you a 185/55R15 or 195/50R15.

Cheers mate, much appreciated.

There's a lot more i'd like to do with it, like putting in a 16v on carbs, spruce up the interior, new wheels, lower it more, the list goes on.

Won't have a new project for a while. I'm not allowed to drive for 6 months for medical reasons :(

At least it'll give me time to find that perfect replacement. E28 Beemer is top of the list at the moment.

I was sorry to see it go too, i watched him drive it until it was out of view. It's weird seeing someone else drive 'your' car away. The buyer was a good guy too, a proper enthusiast. He's from Tassie and flew up to drive it back. It's in good hands :)

I'll miss it but it was good timing really as it would have just been sat in the garage for the next few months.
