Well the track day bug has bitten after a day at Wakefield yesterday. Had previously had some experience in the Bora 4Motion that preceded the R32, but it was certainly a very different kettle of fish. Rained almost all the way down to Goulburn, and was thinking that would make for some fun, but the sun broke through about 40kms out and it stayed fine all day - 18 degrees and a dry track. Perfect.

Initial impressions were that the R was lacking in feel a bit, but that really wasn't helped by road tires that have almost had it. And as the day progressed I found it easier and easier to place the car on the track, and adjust it at speed, it actually is quite throttle adjustable through the corners, although it never really gives way to full oversteer (something I think I'm going to have to address with the Haldex controller).

Much, much more grip than I thought possible, and it helped to have one of the trainers come out and show me just how much the R can actually be pushed - highlight being a full four wheel slide at 130km/h, and the car just felt beautifully balanced throughout. Can't say the same for my heart rate though...

And I have to say, full credit to German engineering, the thing is virtually unbreakable, especially the brakes, which faded very little all day, despite having copped a thrashing. Indeed, they were working so hard that the lovely blue paint that once adorned the front calipers has been somewhat baked black!

A few highlights from the day on the link below.

I think this could be the beginning of a very expensive habit...

Awesome footage cus! Noticed that it did certainly want to understeer hey?

Nice chase you put up against the 350z too!

Curious on what a haldex controller is in terms of controlling your understeer?

Do you have any mods done to your R?

hey man that was awesome! Loved the in-car camera view too and chasing the ??? around the track-that looked like a lot of fun!

I haven't tracked my car yet so you have inspired me to have another thin k about it.
cheers

Awesome vid! Great to see R32 owners getting out the track and having some real fun!

Sideways at 130 clicks would give me a heart attack, lol.

Nice work. I've done a few tracks days in my previous cars (not in the R yet) and it's a bug that turns quite expensive. Did you notice the differences with ESP off and on or did you have it off the whole time? Would be interesting to see if your lap times were better with it off or on.

Thanks W1ngnut, the 350 had me, but only just... no mods as yet, talking to Ian at Rennenhaus at the moment about a few bits and pieces, haldex among them - primary benefit being more drive more quickly to the rears...

I can imagine - but then those brakes have a fair job to do given the pedal just to the right has the power to reverse the earth's polarity...

Yeah mate - I saw your GTI there earlier in the day and was going to say g'day, but you disappeared. Nice wheels you've got on there too.

Will do, thanks Frenchie... just got to find a few spare minutes! Will be hopefully posting some more footage from the mysterious Peats Ridge track day in a few weeks, although they are apparently being pretty strict on video etc... will see

Had ESP on pretty much the whole time - forgot to switch it off on one lap and it interferes a bit quickly for the track...
