View Full Version : R32 exhaust options

Ok dont know if this has flowed onto here but i was wondering about exhausts...
now SUGA's is insane and same with Frenchies... but to be honest i wont be spending that much on a new one of the Kreissieg or Capristo
not because they are not two of the most beautiful exhausts i have ever seen and heard for the VW golf R32's
just because i could spend 3 ish on an exhaust and some rims for the same price or less may be even some change left over....
So I am looking within the range below unless some one has some more ideas and or some exhausts that some one is off loading.... in or after july
so the options are:
Arqray (however i want 4"-4.5" tips...)
Supersprint
Miltek (not sure about this one to be honest)
Eurojet
The only issue i have is, It is my daily drive I dont want it to be droning all the time... i.e when i am not giving it (that is urban f1) i dont want a drone in my cabin....
so i am asking two things...
1) what exhaust do you think is the best one to look at...
and
2) which one will reduce the drone in the cabin
or do i have to install a butterfly valve and will that make a difference
secondly if any one is off loading an exhaust system ill be in the market after or during July...
also incase any one is interested in a group buy keep me in the loop...

you really gotta pay to play when modding r32s, nothing comes cheap for these cars! bigwill can chime in for arqray and jig or jayc can answer questions for supersprint, but seems like a trend is emerging where they eventually go for the Capristo anyway.

true true... but it is still up there in the prices.... just got price around 4500... the misses would KILL ME
if she knew i was thinking of spending that much
but then again i am sure i am on borrowed time already
what about the Borla

I had the Milltek resonated which i got from Ian Rennenhaus, great exhaust and would look into that. Supersprint and Arqray are similar IMO but from the clips i've heard Arqray is a bit more muffled and the Milltek is still sharp and raspy up top, but deeper than stock. No drone is good but still loud when you want it to be.
I personally couldn't spend that much on an exhaust either (considering it's mostly for sound and no real gains on an N/A) but sounds like the Capristo seems like the best of the best, but figured the R32 already sounds quite good and 2-3k is still heaps to spend on a catty. Another thing is exhausts sound better from outside the car (as well as the Doppler effect :)).
Johno's r32 comparo vid might be of some assistance to you Aaron.

I would stay away from ALL us made exhaust Neuspeed/Borla/Eurojet/Magnaflow/Blueflame? - loud and drone is what you'll get..
Budget I would go for Milltek, purely for looks and deep sound - not sure if they are still made in the Uk or China ?
4500 is for Capristo ? that will be just exhaust no valvetronic system, which you don't really need. This is a good option.
Misses does not need to anything Aaron - what happens and said here stays here >D

yeah looking closer it is another 1500 or so for the valveronic system....
F&^)(UKK
lol
almost thought it would be within the budget
Frenchie
what about the arqray.. u had that before eh....
or would you still recomend he milltek...
dont mind the miltek i just was told it drones....???
CAM thanks for the video...... but it has just made it even harder.... SHIT nah lol thanks mate...

The NON-RES version gets a bit deeper (can drone but nothing like the US exhausts and everyone's tollerance is different) however the RES versions doesn't drone at all like stock (however some people claim it's too quiet but i went back to the stock exhaust and it was only then i noticed that it was noticeably louder and deeper than stock). I still think the Milltek is the best value, the 4" tips look great too but worth reading up on all of them.
Islos
27-04-2010, 10:25 PM
yeah it is alot of reading and research.....
i dont mind the Miltek... and yes they are very resonable...
i am just wondering if any one has the non res and can give me an idea if there is any droning in the cabin at low speeds...
that is where i dont want it i dont mind when i want to give it i want to heard the exhaust i just dont want to drive all day with it droning and have to put up the music to drown it out
thats my issue....

:) yeah it adds up - but I reckon it would be a nice exhaust/option to go for Capristo with no valvetronic system - its going to sound beefy, no drone and running dual pipes to your cat back. Best value for $$ I say.
Arqray is a beautiful exhaust within budget, sound is low and deep but tips are small. As mentioned by G Milltek is a good option, affordable, low and deep sound, big tips.
Decisions decisions..
Islos
27-04-2010, 10:33 PM
so the capristo without the valvetronic is just going to be open all the time...
and when i am grany driving it isnt droning in the cabin??
p.s install how much am i looking for that as well??
because i was even thinking arqray and replace the tips but for that i might as well go for the miltek....
hmmmm
Frenchie
27-04-2010, 10:44 PM
Best check with Martin at Capristo HQ but from memory on sport mode which is half open.
Open mode is considered illegal/restricted due sound and emissions hence locked from factory.
No drone what so ever what ever mode you choose.
Install would be quick without valvetronic system. 1 hour tops so $90.
I personally wouldn't spend $2.5k on the Arqray to then cut tips thats is just scandalous :)
Best is go for the Milly or save a little more and get something good and you want straight from the start...
Take your time and do it right.

27-04-2010, 10:54 PM
yeah i will have too....
the capristo is even seeming more likley...
i might jus have to do the exhaust and the rims and then hold off on the rest till i get back from holidays.....
i might even buy the exhaust over seas on holidays and have it shipped back...
thnking of going to jpn and china i wonder if i could get it cheaper over there with the exchange rate....
one more thing though is there any problem fitting them to the 2006 models..??
i might have to find that out...

that didn't take long at all >D not too sure how you'll find it cheaper thou since i doubt Japan or China stock it?
Islos
27-04-2010, 11:14 PM
well i am still going to do my shopping but i dont think they do stock it in either japan or china
i just got a price for the usa... at 3700.... in AUS dollars however it does not include postage and i am sure that is at least another 500....
which is not much cheaper than over here....
hmmm
i am going to have to do more work though the capristo is probably the perfect exhaust i just need to do my home work...
so not done yet... lol

My Capristo will be here on Friday if you want to check it out!!

Chris good question i was wondering the same thing...
However I have also been working the numbers... unless I win the lottery I cant justify spending that much cash on the exhaust it self as beautiful as it is I need to consider the insurance as well...
I might have to back burner this for a bit... I could happly get it now but thats a huge amount of cash when I have the mortgage etc........
It is hard to justify right now... may be after a few bonuses... but I think I might wait and hope for a price drop due to the New R being released
Hmmm....
I might just have to get a second job... AHHHHH lol
Sorry i think better when i get it all out....
Frenchie
28-04-2010, 11:08 AM
Aaron - make sure you state that your R32 is pre 2007 as they will have to modify exhaust make due to cross member.
Have a look at this thread Jason had to do the samething..
http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?701-Capristo-has-taken-a-turn
Easier to get exhaust here directly too Aaron - too much fussing around.
Chris - I can't remember what Capristo said to me in regards to upgrading Valvetronic system at a latere date, best is to check with them.

ill be honest Frenchie...
I was very excitable last night probably because it was past my bed time... now that i am at work and have put on my Financial Planning hat (not the car nut one)
I just cant justify that kind of money when i could be using it as a deposit on the next property....
because the issue being that I will be spending 6500 on the exhaust and then the rims and the coil overs we will be tipping 10 at least... probably more...
Which Ill be honest there is no point for me to be spending that much as at the moment i am not in the position to do so....
I think ill take you first suggestion and look at the Milltek... They may not sound as good and be as beautiful as the Capristo but i can probably get within 6500 at least with some rims and may be even some coil overs... if I buy some newly used ones....
I do thank you for the dreaming time of what the car could look and sound like but i think ill stick to the $6500 and under in spending and go from there...
It is killing me to make this decision trust me but once i am in a better situation with more money available to spend.... i can always go from there i guess......

Thanks mate...
to be honest if it wornt for the fact of the buying another property i have the cash now and it is hard to say no ill be honest i almost completed the purchase last night....
The Capristo is the cream ala Cream of exhaust's and like wise the Kressing ....
but the Milltek is the Donkey of them and by that i mean it might not sound the best and run the fastest but she shaw does the job and does it well and i think i can stick to that for now....
ill just have to come for a drive in your beast next time.... lol :)

Milltek is what I have on order through Ian. The current exchange rate just made the price way too good to go past!
If price was no object I would have bought the Fujitsubo exhaust for the GTI which is completely made of titanium and is 6kg lighter than the OEM exhaust system but it only had tiny gains and it's actually quieter than the stock system (Ti might actually absorb sound?!).

Nice move Mr Fox
Milltek's are a great exhaust and would have no problem getting, awesome sound and sexy tips, now I heard they were getting made in China and not the UK anymore ?
Someone confirm ?
Here is my Non-Res Supersprint when I had it. The sound is unbelievable but you do get drone inside the cabin when cruising. I then installed the RES and the drone disappeared. Made the sound more full and throaty but still has the raspiness but is slightly subdued. JayC had the Supersprint and sold it for the Capristo. The question is, are you the kind of guy that will regret a decision knowing that there is something better out there. If not, then Milltek or Supersprint or Arqray are good brands.

I have been trawling the you tubes the forums every thing finding out as much as i can about every thing...
I know what you mean and I am the kind that may change his mind only if the exhaust is getting to me
I really want to let the car sing and the oem is just so restricted... but i do enjoy have peace and quite when i am not giving it... so that is the delemar.
If Milltek Non-Res is to dronny I will keep looking but i like the supersprint as well the only thing turning me away is the drone in it and so far my direction is toward the milly's
I am interested kinds in the Milltek res but to be honest i dont know enough to cast judgement on it at the moment either... SO Complicated
I really think i am going to be throwing my self at a pile of pipes at the moment... This is not cricket, I am getting to far into this soon i am going to be wearing it around with me....
Thank you for your help like every one else and please if any one can answer the question on the Milltek Non_res without me buying and fitting first that would be great.
Frenchie thanks for that mate... I might hit him up for both... Ill await his response....

seems to be the cheaper option these days, question is ? are they passing on savings >D
@ A- Sounds like you need to take your time - do some more research, think about it, leave it for a while and then come back to decide when you are fresh..
For the Milly best check R32OC uk website - I'm sure alot of those guys are running Millys, see what they say.

So do you remember when people used to cane stuff that was made in China (a quote from the Armageddon movie comes to mind here when they are inside the space station). At first, everything was cheap and fell apart, but who cared it was cheap. Fast forward to present day and now things have changed as the global economy has found it more and more profitable to shift more and more manufacturing to China and other like countries due to the cost savings. This has meant a lot of capital investment has gone into the factories there which may not have occured in developed countries due to the prohibitive cost of new infrastructure etc. Products now coming from China are gradually getting better and as you say most things are now made there.
So, item produced in China by a factory worker paid minimum wage much less than in a developed country in a newer factory with better machines (assumed), compared with factory worker producing the same product in a developed country at greater cost with no discernable difference in quality. All things being equal and the price providing an equal profit, you would expect to buy the China made product as it will be cheaper.
So unless you are getting a product that has such great engineering R&D behind it or that requires the "skills" of the craftsman rather than only a piece of machinery to pump out parts and put together, my question is are you getting a much inferior product simply because it has Made in China stamped on it?
In the current case with the exhaust you'd probably want to make sure the quality of the materials and workmanship are to your satisfaction. I'm pretty sure if factories train their monkeys (no this isn't a racial comment) correctly there wouldn't be much difference in the welding. It would depend upon the individual skills of the worker which could be better or worse in either Made in <insert country here>.
So as Christophe has pointed out, given that there is a Made in China tag on it reckon you can bargain down the price (I'm sure the offer from Ian is more than great already).

good argument... i would think that you are a lawyer by trade with that kind of post....
However I am a little confused over the alst comment.
I dont recollect saying anything about bargaining down the price, I am awaiting Ian's reply to the price of the object in question.... being the milltek Non res exhaust
however

Aaron,
I had the non-res Milltek bought from Ian about 8 months ago. Loved the sound but it will drone on the freeways in D. Around town it was great.
Bought a resonating section of G-rig which i had installed. I believe this was slightly smaller than the OEM resonating section on the Milltek? ( Is this correct G?)
Im happy with the sound now, only small amounts of drone when going up hills in 6th gear. Im in sydney quite a bit if you would like to hear it just let me know.
Cheers,
Mitch

It was a custom resonator that takes out approx 3dB. Not the same arrangement as the milltek resonator but does more than a bottle or hot dog would do. I'll update this post with a photo later. Cost me a bit over $200. Originally did it as I thought the mulltek res version was slightly too quiet but looking back was probably about right but others may like something louder, it's fairly personal.

i think there will be alot of interest for APs Capristo but will take awhile to sell since it it big money and like Aaron said he could buy a cheaper exhaust and wheels for that price, but no doubt the Capristo would give me the biggest smile every time i drove the car out of the two options >D

Sweet you can never tell with typing
and my spelling and grama is up shit creek and sinking... lol
but on that note mate
Would the Kressing muffler do the job
or in saying that would the capristo back end do the job, if it is a flow issue because are you running 3 inch not 2. a bit (i think the R32's are 2.25 or 2.5 or 2.75??)
just an idea
ill spot rambeling now...

see what i mean by spelling... i am blaming my backwards typing...
Paolo you are right mate... the capristo would be putting the biggest smile on my face...
but i just got the quote for the Milltek non res from Ian today and I am there and some more....
and it will leave a tidy sum for the rest of the mods... :)
but in that is my next question
correct me if i am wrong but the flapper mod that many do is to keep the solanoid on the exhaust open.....
can this system be applied to any exhaust or have I got the flapper mod all wrong.....
and is it something that can be purchased...
the Flapper/solanoid....

Should just copy blu32's custom exhaust with remus backbox (now Sourpratt's car). That thing sounded great.

i am placing the order....
So did you order the RES or NON-RES??
I found some pics of Longwalls resonator, that you can get fitted to the straight pipe if you find drone a problem (or could get a small muffler). A single bottle or hot dog doesn't seem to do much though.
Cant remember the exact dimensions but think it is 12" long and 4" Outside diameter. Internal diameter is 70mm (~2.75").

id say this knocked out about 60% of the drone from the non res version. Which was great around town, but super loud. Not alot of throttle through carparks would set alarms off.

Apologies again for not being able to make it this weekend aaron. Have ordered a new set of tyres, being fitted on Wednesday morning (RE001's) wanted the F1 Assymetricals but they are a few weeks wait apparently. Might see you at the GTG on wednesday.

The brace under our R32 apparently kills the chance to fit the Capristo system, buyers be aware of that for the early MkV cars likes ours.
Any other worthy systems or shall I venture into wheels..?
For the 07 R32's yes there is a rear brace that interferes with the direct fitting of the Capristo. Capristo themselves were not aware that there was a deviation of R32's made by VW. However a Capristo on 07 cars has been installed before by JayC. They simply had to custom make a pipe that goes around that brace. PM him and ask for his feedback about this.

Yes, I got my Capristo & had to get it modified which the guys at Ramspeed organised, only took them a few hours and it was a perfect fit.
I still enjoy the sound of the exhaust everyday I drive the car and still can't decide which mode I prefer driving in.

yeah the stock exhaust sounds great, bit quiet though and sounds completely different from inside/outside the car.
The Milltek resonated is a great upgrade without spending a fortune, and gives a deeper note and a bit more volume with no drone.
