View Full Version : [How To] Upgrade your RNS510 Rev (A,B,C) to Firmware 3810 and VW V5 Maps
DeanCorp
27-02-2012, 03:30 PM
Hi All,
I thought I should give something back to the VWGolf community, since I must admit I have been trolling a fair bit lately
I can't drive until March 1, so in anticipation for that date, I thought I might as well update my RNS510 to the latest official firmware and the latest VW V5 Maps from Sensis.
I'd just like to give a big thanks to David (xc17ed) for helping out with this one.
The firmware provided for this guide is only for RNS510 REV A, B, C.
Revision D and above will need a different version.
After completing this guide your RNS510 of Revision A, B, C will now have:
• The latest official VW firmware 3810.
• The latest Sensis VW V5 Maps 7679.
Files you will need to download:
sw 3810.nrg
VW V5 Nav.iso
These can be downloaded from my iDisk account via this link:
VW RNS510 FW & V5 Maps (https://public.me.com/kramersh)
Password: deancorp
So what you will need to do is, make sure you have Nero or imgburn installed, for Mac Users, I am sorry ,but you will have to use Windows as the Firmware image is in .nrg format which is a Nero proprietary image format.
Click here to download imgburn (http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download)
or Download a 15 day Free Trial of Nero from here (http://www.nero.com/ena/downloads-nero11-trial.php)
I would recommend burning the firmware image to a CD as the RNS510 seems to be a little bit fussy with media types.
Open Nero > Recorder>Burn Image. Browse to the file sw 3810.nrg (See image)
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/8781/screenshot20120227at144.png
I would burn the disc at a low speed 4X-8X to prevent any hiccups during the installation process.
Insert the burnt firmware image into your RNS 510 DO NOT put the key into the ignition, simply turn the RNS510 on so it is using the battery. You will then see the RNS510 reading the disc and begin the installation process. It will take about 55 minutes to install. At one point it may look like it is frozen, but don't worry it is still running.
I have attached some photos of the installation process;

New Splash Screen!
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/2431/img0818n.jpg
Confirming the new firmware has been installed, by holding down setup to access the 'secret' menu
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/2743/img0820eu.jpg
You will notice now a new splash screen upon reboot. I have found the RNS510 loads up much faster and seems far more responsive, it really is a worthwhile upgrade. Everything else worked fine, I have the VW/Skoda OEM Bluetooth kit and experienced no problems. I also have the Kufatec TV Tuner and that wasn't effected either.
Once the firmware installation process is complete, you will need to reinstall the maps as that is all that was removed after upgrading the firmware.
To burn the maps, follow the same process above in Nero.
For Mac Users, this can be done through Disk Utility, which is found in Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.
In Disk Utility, click Images, Burn, browse to the VW V5 Nav.iso file and burn. (see image).
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5739/screenshot20120227at156.png
Once you have the new V5 Maps (7679) you will see a speed sign, which will now give you information about the speed limit on the street you are travelling on.
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/2153/img0823hj.jpg
Please let me know if you have any questions or encounter any problems during the installation process :)

Deanski,
My 'versions' of 3810 won't show the map speed limit on the A revision unit I have. However. I'm prepared to download yours and give it a go. (Not that it's a big issue...but...well, why not?)
Well done on the "How to" and the links.

My speed thing wasn't showing initially I turned on in advanced settings show demo or something and went back to the main screen and it appeared again. Perhaps it's a little glitch, but now it's on permanently. You can turn the demo mode off once you see the speed sign.
Let me know how you go.

Hey guys. Just updated the firmware and it updated fine. But how the hell do I load the maps on? Just won't freaking work.
Will load over on the blue screen with the notify eject back option screen. But never asks me to save or anything? Help!?
I have no maps on my car now..

I have no idea what I did but everything is the same, but in mine the only thing different is it says: how version:H11.
Instead you have H04.
But in setup I still have no speed setting to tick :(

Restart your RNS by holding down the top 4 buttons < > eject etc..
Re-burn the maps disc at a slow speed on a CD-R, insert disc wait a minute and then press eject, and you will see the loading screen.

Have been trying to access this screen for ages... can someone explain to me if accessing this screen requires a vagcom mod or if there's a series of buttons to get to the screen.

you need to activate it via VAGCOM first to get to that screen. Then, as Dean described, its just a matter of holding down the setup button until that screen shows up. The option to open the VERSION INFORMATION must be enabled on VAGCOM first

You know what? Technically after upgrading the firmware that should reset that VAGCOM change I had done anyway.. So I am thinking, they have allowed the Version Information as a 'secret' feature without having to enable it. But I did notice, I lost all the other technical information I never used, which may still be enabled in VAGCOM if I needed to.

I have the Kufatec VIM module, so I am not sure whether the software upgrade would be disabled. As I said the only thing I had to re-install was the maps, everything else was retained.
You can try just re-installing again.

*UPDATE*
Well, for weeks I've been trying to get the "Speed Limit Display" option to be available in "SETUP/MAPS..etc etc". No go. Poor old Deanski has been pulling his hair out trying to come up with all sorts of solutions, and today, I found what appeared to be the crucial link to my issue.
Every time I loaded/downgraded/upgraded FW from 3810 to 2760 and back to 3810, the Radio stations were always available. I lost my music and maps, but the Radio was always the same. Until I found this little nugget of info from Chris (ozmale)
There is however clearly something odd about the firmware updates that may explain why some get the speed limit display and others don't. The firmware does not erase everything. E.g. all my tone and balance settings were untouched and given that the firmware is supposed to reformat the HDD then there is clearly some part of flash memory that is not overwritten, in fact I would say a lot of the settings are not over written. To get speed limits back we may need to find a way to overwrite the settings area of memory.
Chris
So...I found an image which purported to re-format the HDD based on a FW2720. I gave that a go...but I still had the radio stations available after applying this image. And the FW on-board was still 3810 (but no maps/music of course). Now...the Speed Limit Display option is available. To compound my troubleshooting, while investigating all this, I reset my Module 37 (Navigation) to the same long code as on Mavericks site (my-gti.com) with the only difference being my preferred screen colour option. Somehow, I think it was/is the VCDS coding which has enabled the menu option.
Anyway....reloading maps now....about to take the beast for a burst and see what she does.

All done!
My observations upon completing the Firmware update to 3810.
- All music deleted from Hard drive as expected
- No need for PIN code re-entry as advised by Marko and Dean
- All MAP Data lost as expected.
- My home address however was retained and didnt need to be re-entered
- All of my Radio station favourites were there
- My hidden setup menu required to be re-activated via VAGCOM (done)
So thanks again Dean for the write up!

It is a revision C that became a D with the firmware update..

To all, we missed to mention!!!
If you do the firmware update in a "off road" the Speed Limit sign will not show until you drive to an known road, check the versions Maps-Firware to be sure everything it's up to date!,
That's why it's highly recommended to do the Map V5 update after the firmware,
In my case we did the Map V5 update before the firmware and the Map info remained after the firmware update, hope this makes sense to all,
So, no difference in the order of the Updates Firmware then Maps is the desirable, but not necessary,
Good updates to all!!

my observations
Before - when MDI in "Mix" mode, both skipping track and moving back were "mix"ed. i.e. could never go back to a song properly
Before - could not use voice for navigation
Both are now rectified and working.

Apology if this question has already been asked and answered...
I upgraded from 2720 to 3810 and everything went fine, running faster and all that. However for some weird reason the points of interest don't work and in the setup menu for navigation the 'my points of interest' option is greyed out. Seem to remember someone said if going from 1xxx/2xxx to 3xxx that this POI issue happens?
So my question... Is there a way to get POI working? Or is there a way I can blow away the hard drive and start a complete fresh install?
Thanks ;)
Steve

Actually, quite the contrary. Firmware upgrade worked like a charm. However, I can't tell if the map update is happening, as it doesn't really display anything on the screen. Should it?

V5 is 7679. Better go back to post #1 and download the map from there. Should resolve your POI issues.
Ideally...burn to CDR at 1x speed.
So what you will need to do is, make sure you have Nero or imgburn installed, for Mac Users, I am sorry ,but you will have to use Windows as the Firmware image is in .nrg format which is a Nero proprietary image format.

But from the info above does it mean mine is version C or D?you haven't provided enough info. The ONLY way to be 100% sure what version your unit is, is to run a scan via VCDS. This will show unit version. RNS info screens (after FW upgrade) may 'trick' the unit into displaying itself as a D version, but in actual fact is an A version (or B or C) - mine is an A but thinks it's a D. VCDS reveals it is an A unit.

Yeh, damn....
I don't have a VCDS my self....
I don't want to upgrade it and then I find out its D so I lose everything? Dooes it format everything so when its not compatible my device won't be working or its ok ?

There is no issue in upgrading via FW and your unit now becoming a "Revision D".
High chance you will lose maps/music, however, it's simple enough to reload them (if you have the map Disc?). Usually your radio station selections, and Nav addresses (personal avourites that you have saved) won't be wiped.
Upgrading your FW is not as distressing as you are believing it to be. The only thing required from you during the upgrade process is patience. The unit will go thru some extended periods of inactivity, resetting etc. Be patient. Process takes no more than one hour.

Ok... I wrote about the POI issues I'd been having with 3810 and V5 maps. Right now I'd settle for nuking the install and starting from scratch as it appears to be an issue with how the hard drive is formatted.

There is a "format" Firmware version that does a 'soft' format of the RNS (not a full blown nuke). What is the model/version of your RNS?

I just updated my firmware to 3810 and it worked fine.
I then proceed to install the maps, all went fine and in the setup screen displayed 7679.
When i went for a drive the maps screen is blank and the navigation route guidance can't find a route. I updated the firmware and maps in an off route location (undercover carpark).

Thank you very much for the files and instructions - most useful!
I was wondering if anyone knows how I might change my car icon for the parking sensor screen - it now shows a generic white sedan rather than a reasonable approximation of my model.
Thankfully this seems to be the only niggling issue so far, so thanks again :)

i installed everything fine
then went to put some tracks on my sd card to upload to the RNS so i went to sit in the car and turned the RNS on but it wouldn't turn on but i could hear it working. I grabbed the keys and turned the car on and the splash screen appears but then goes to a black screen again!
is this just because the RNS has been on too long and i should give it a few hours to recharge?! it isn't bricked is it?!

after the instal, did the unit eject the CD/DVDR with the FW on it?

RNS510. Its the only thing she is missing, She has leather, electric seats, sunroof and DSG.Ok Chris...let's get a little more intimate here.
Where are you purchasing the RNS from? (If you have an ebay link, chuck it up....some members may have purchasing experience with the seller). What model RNS (A,B,C,D,E,F,H) does the seller claim this unit to be?
Install is a piece o' piss.....FW software to upgrade the unit is freely available via the internet. Maps are available also. Only real 'issue' will be that you will have to adjust some of the VCDS coding in respect of getting the Satnav details showing on the MFD and (maybe) getting all the steering wheel buttons to work correctly (not a big or time intense task). You may believe that all the MFSW buttons work now, but once the RNS is installed you may lose some functionality. Again...don't fret, it's easy to restore.
Heaps of people in Shitney to assist you.
HAHAHAH Shitney. Well i havent decided on a model just making sure it can be done first. And i was going to get one from Ebay. Havent looked at any on there lately. Anyone know any good sellers on there? When shes ready then ill start looking for a unit just doing some homework in the meantime.

That will probably be due to the maps, you will have to wait for the updated revision of the maps DVD which is expected to come out shortly anyway.

I found that when ever I did any work with firmware or maps on my rns510 it became a little insensitive, but always fixed itself after I moved the car up and down the driveway.
Remember speed input from the wheels/engine is an integral part of RNS510 operation. It is not like normal GPS units where speed is calculated from GPS, the RNS510 only seems to use the vehicle speed. Hence no speed display on the RNS unit itself.

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life.
I installed V5 maps on firmware 2760, then last night I upgraded firmware from 2760 to 3810 filename was 3810a_noru.rar
The firmware went through fine i have revision (C - RNS510)
Now though i cannot load maps again, i asks for the maps DVD for the GPS to work and does not copy over.
When i was running firmaware 2760 it copied over fine, upgraded maps disappeared and now cannot copy to HDD, must use DVD at all times.
Can anyone help?

I just took the DVD out of the RNS510 and still had all the map info there, so i can conclude, i feel like a dumbass, but all is working.
If you ever upgrade to new firmware, it does not ask you to confirm for new maps, simply copies them over.

Hi Mate and Welcome to the forum, when you get a chance do and Intro in the introduction section.
Your head units is Revision B (1T0 035 680 B) but this doesn't say what maps you have, hold down the "Setup" button on the until for about 30seconds and this should display a hidden menu that will show you the Map version.
Thanks Chris. I've posted a newbie intro on that forum now. ;)
The secret menu isn't visible unfortunately. Sorry, this pic might be more helpful! http://db.tt/2dnrf9dg Is H03 0900 the firmware version?

Can't see anything i recognize, my unit was a revision C and it wouldn't show that menu either, i had to go in through VAGCOM (VCDS) and activate it to bring it up, i'll find the steps and add it on here so you can do it.
Ok found it; - 37–Navigation, go into adaption and change channel 50 to 1 (will be 0).
To enter the test/setup mode when the RNS 510 is operating press and hold the setup button, keep holding it when the radio menu appears and shortly after the test menu appears . Reboot my unit after coding it but it may be possible a power cycle is enough.
You might have to do a reboot of the unit once it's done, "Hold down < > + *" If that doesn't work just let the unit sit for an hour or two to power down.
Thanks Chris. Not sure I want to put a PC partition my Mac to run bootcamp. Off to find a friend with a PC...

I don't understan why they are coming with such older versions Firmwares and Maps,
hey guys just wondering if anyone had the CD for this? i cant seem to get this s*^T working and its killing my head!! if anyone in melbourne has it i can supply lunch of some sort for this! :)
