INTRODUCTION
Names Paolo and I own a 2009 VW Golf GTI Pirelli Edition in Black Magic Pearl.
Came factory fitted with
- RNS510 unit, and
- Rear parking sensors
- K04 turbo
The GTI was my choice of car after getting a taste of driving my cousins Jetta TFSI with the same engine. The turbo rush and torque took me away so i was set on one. I then found out that Australia was releasing the Pirelli variant which would be a limited edition model and only 400-500 available. The seats kind of turned me off but once i sat in them, they were very supportive and moreso then the regular GTI's. Another aspect was the already colour coded kit which would have saved me later on down the track if i decided on the normal GTI. But the biggest plus was the K04 turbo (also found in the Audi S3 and TTS) which after doing much research, had alot more potential and since i was looking into modifying it, this was the perfect choice.
This is my beast stock:

Arqray catback (street line of Fujitsubo).

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/resized%20photos/catback2.jpg
I LOVE how the muffler just sticks out from the bottom! but may become an issue later on once it gets a drop =/
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/resized%20photos/IMG_0014-1.jpg
Very high quality. In regards to sound, it is similar to stock but has more bass. Hoping a downpipe will give it more character. No real gains in performance as far as I could feel which is expected from catbacks since they are just for ‘noise’, but a US dealer posted a dyno showing a 10hp gain.
- Modification #2
GIAC Tune
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/CAR/giac_logo-1.jpg
The Pirelli was fun to drive stock but with the tune, it just takes it up that extra level! More power and torque! By far the most worthwhile bang-for-your-buck upgrade. This tune has actually made me very excited to drive the car hahah >D
- Modification #3
GruppeM Intake
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/resized%20photos/P280609_140701.jpg
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/resized%20photos/IMG_0040.jpg
I decided to go with this intake because of GruppeM’s high reputation in the intake market and plus how awesome they look! I also bought open fog grills and an intake hose to channel some extra air into the filter. Its not an intake that attracts attention which is what I was aiming for. You could only really hear it with the windows up and the music off, and even then, the sucking of the air and slight "pssshhh" was very faint. So far very happy with it.
First Dyno
I went to the dyno set up for VW’s and Audi’s last year and achieved 167.9kw atw which I wasn't that impressed with. From all the tuners claims, just the tune would bring the power to 230kw, so implementing a 15% drivetrain loss, it would be around the 190kwatw figures. But everyone told me not to believe what they claim and its all marketing, and after looking at what others achieved, i was content.

- Modification #4
BFI Torque Arm Insert
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/resized%20photos/BFIinsert.jpg
This was a small mod that was recommended by my mechanic. But once installed, I was quite impressed with the difference. Although there was an increase in NVH, it resulted in quicker and smoother shifting. I also installed it because many have claimed it reduces axle tramp, so decided to try it out in launch control mode and the claims were correct, but it did wheel spin freely hahah. If launched at a high rpm then it would tramp but i keep it within 2000-2500rpms which i also researched was the best for a good launch.
Second Dyno
I was invited to have a free run at the K04 dyno day where a group of S3’s, TTS’s and Pirelli’s to run logs and data tests. To my surprise, I achieved higher then the last dyno day and got 170.8kw atw which was also surprising since that day hit 42 degrees! Tony from Melbourne gave me a drive in his K04 converted GTI with a custom GIAC extreme tune and that had me set on the performance route i was aiming for.

- Modification #5
BSH Intercooler
A worthwhile upgrade in which I immediately felt the difference once installed. No more sluggish performance and always feels 100% with a reduction in heat soak. The small Garrett/Honeywell core makes it more efficient and keeps pressure low. This was a mod that i was going to have to do down the track and since there was a sale on DubAddiction, i had to order it.

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/resized%20photos/INTERCOOLERinstall4.jpg
The install was relatively straight forward and although BSH states no trimming required, i had to cut the already fitted air guidance plates because there was no way you could mount the intercooler without taking them out. One thing thou, putting the front bumper on was a BIG hassle! if you can see from the before and after pics, when we started it was around 2pm and we finished at 9pm! there are TOO MANY screws! and some are in hard to reach areas which made it harder to put back in.
A few pics from a few GTG’s and meet ups:

Pirelli version! So cool to have something different huh? I loved watching this thing pull away from a stand still. Where the R32's looked so smooth launching this thing hunkered downn and squirmed a little when you shifted into 2nd gear. Aggressive!

Alright Paolo, bout time you started your own thread :) keeping everything undercover!!
I like your mods and have seen your Pirelli on numerous occasion, I love it...This would a perfect addition to my garage...
Looks like your pulling some good numbers on dyno..Question is what's next!?
Lovely car Paolo. Impressive dyno runs too.
How much difference did the BSH Intercooler make? Does it provide noticeably more 'oomph?' in certain gears?
When you said "No more sluggish performance" I was thinking well its a pirelli with a giac tune its hardly going to be sluggish to begin with hehe.

hahah i remember daz saying how he was going to use his launch control so i tried following after, but launch control wasn't engaging so i had a crappy launch! if i did it you would know! wheel spin galore! :>

thanks buddy! sluggish in regards to some days it will feel strong and feel fresh whilst others it will lack due to heatsoak. With the intercooler on, it feels like it pulls strong consistently all the time.

After:

Done by Rob@Hunters Hill Tinting who did an impressive job. He did 16% on the front two and 20% on the back two and hatch due to the current darker-than-stock privacy tinted windows. Helps a lot during those hot summer days with the sun beaming BUT at night in poor unlit areas, its a mission! I'd have to drive with the windows down at times. Looks so much better and well worth it ;)
PS don't mind the second photo thinking that the rear is lighter, its just the white garage door in the background =p
But wouldn't it be lighter if it's 20% at the back ? lol
Tints make such a big difference! Looks great!

But wouldn't it be lighter if it's 20% at the back ? lol
Tints make such a big difference! Looks great!
Thanks Suga! with the newer VW's the rear windows come factory tinted (no tint film but the glass itself is actually darker) making them dimmer then the front two, so when i was told to put the 20% on top of the already tinted rear, it would even out with the front too. But i agree makes a very big difference and makes the car look ALOT better
Ahh I had no idea! I wonder why they only come factory tinted at the back and not the front as well???
Tints just make the car look "complete", kind of feels a bit naked without ( to me anyways) and especially on a black car like yours!
Awesome stuff and hope to see you at the next meet!!
First mod to any car...tints! Tops it off so nicely.
:)
I'm actually going to get mine redone I think. The previous owner didn't have them tinted darkest legal. They've got more of a blue tinge to them and you can see through them quite a bit.
I park out in the sun all day at work, I more so want it to keep the sun out. Although it definitely makes the car look better.
I agree suga it does make the car look naked lol

AWE Boost Gauge
I actually did this quite awhile ago but didn't have pictures so i took some quick ones with my 2mp iphone camera.

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/aweboostgauge2.jpg
This was installed for trouble shooting and monitoring purposes. It was advertised that the colours were perfectly matched with the rest of the dash and instrument cluster but as you can tell its alot brighter. I like the fact that it sits in the aircon vent with an OEM style look whilst still maintains functionality of the air flowing through the vents.

VF K04 Intake
Out with the old...
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/oldintakecover.jpg
(btw i don't have KW v3 coilovers, the GruppeM intake was just conveniently placed on top of the box by my mechanic!)
...in with the new
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/vfintake2.jpg
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/vfintake.jpg
Instantly noticed the difference sound-wise with this intake on compared with the GruppeM. The GruppeM was pretty much silent but with THIS you definitely hear the intake working by sucking in air as well as dose and the flutter that intakes are characterized for having. Performance wise, it doesn't feel 100% and seems to me like lag has increased on my car. But this is due to the larger intake piping compared to the other aftermarket intakes and mainly for not upgrading to the required flash specifically for this intake. This will be happening very soon thou.
UPDATE: INTERCOOLER
Whilst at Exoticars, Arthur took the air guidance plates off, mounted the intercooler higher and took the inserts in the fog grills out so it could work more efficiently. It looks ALOT meaner and i really like it! :>

Paolo, what is your 0-100km times?
no clue don't have any devices that would time it but i'm suspecting around the 5-5.5 mark? the hard part is getting the launch down without axle-tramping or wheel spinning too much off the line.

Yeah 100% on this. I think the GruppeM is pretty much silent and not the intake to go for if you're after noise.
Nice modding man. I've had a look at a few of these. They're not cheap so it looks like your car will hold value which is always nice. Also, it looks like your car makes more power than the new MK6 GTI too. That's killer.
PPS: Axle tramping is a REALLY bad thing and I'm upset to hear that your car has a problem with it. I know for a fact that when I had my DC5R with stock suspension I could do hard launches without any issues but as soon as I lowered the car with lowering springs and higher spring rates I had sever axle tramping.

Yeah 100% on this. I think the GruppeM is pretty much silent and not the intake to go for if you're after noise.

Cheers big ears! the pirelli isn't really MK6 GTI territory, its more in the Golf R and Audi S3 and TTS zone as they share a bigger K04 engine and better internals.
Yeah axle tramp sucks but i don't get it all the time only when launching it hard or from going from a complete stop and just applying 100% throttle. There are some suspension mods that could help out abit such as a torque arm insert (which i have already), antilift kits and coilovers which are said to reduce wheel spin and axle tramp. But the best way is to go easy on the throttle from the start then increase once traction is gained which i still have to practice =p
Car's looking awesome Paolo! Great choice on the intake change too, though the GruppeM is a nice bit of bling. lol
For me, I noticed when replacing my insert with the full pendulum mount that it almost completely eliminated wheel hop... Just spins freely now!
Also noticed a definite improvement in the power transfer to the wheels.

thanks matey! dealer hasn't seen any of my new mods but they can only void warranty if the particular modification caused the fault otherwise they're going to have to cover it. Fingers crossed i will try to get them to replace the DSG mechatronic unit before warranty is finished.

Exactly, I haven't axle tramped in at least 6 months. I still get wheel spin in 3rd gear though :>
The key is having a light launch so your wheels start rolling and as you get moving you can slam it down harder.

Some may think I'm retarded, but I think the BEST thing about these Pirelli models is the fact that the lower half of the car is colour coded! That's my number 1 pet hate about the MKV! Pirelli looks a thousand times better. (no offence intended to regular MK V owners)
Nice ride :)

Eurospeed Downpipe
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/CAR/Idownpipe.jpg
For a custom downpipe, it really is quality! I was also told it has a high-quality cat as well and for the price I paid it better have been! It has definitely helped my car open up both performance wise and noise wise. In terms of sound, it sounds exactly like it did with my catback which was semi-stockish type of sound. But when you really give it, it roars and releases this different note that I haven’t heard before! This is one of the things I was looking for because just the catback didn’t really do it for me. Now I am pretty satisfied.
Wayne Angle Block
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/CAR/wayneangleblock.jpg
I ordered this awhile ago from Wayne (ironic) himself in America because I have read countless threads of how this little thingy-majig he designed and produced, helped get rid of that dirty check engine light that appears when running a downpipe larger then stock.
To be more technical, when a high-flow cat is installed, exhaust gases pass by the cat at a faster rate which disrupts the ECU. The purpose of this is that it retracts the oxygen sensor from the flow of the gases and enables the ECU to balance the readings out. Since GIAC do not delete o2 sensors with their tune, I decided this was the next best thing to attach once my downpipe was sorted.

Autotech High Pressure Fuel Pump
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/CAR/autotech.jpg
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/CAR/autotechpump.jpg
Can’t really say much about this mod because it all ties in with the GIAC map that goes with it. I was initially considering this or the APR pump which was heavily researched and tested and is still rated the best aftermarket HPFP for the MKV’s. But I did do more research and discovered that the newer revised version of the Autotech pump was as reliable as ever with many members in America running it for many thousands of miles without any failure. I will also have to regularly check the cam follower, which is a common issue on the MKV's, but since I have not put on many km’s on my car as of yet, it is not an issue of concern for the time being.
RS4 Fuel Rail Pressure Valve
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/CAR/rs4.jpg
Not the best photo, but its difficult to get a good shot of it because of the location! The gold valve is the RS4 fuel rail pressure valve which was ordered from Audi. This was done too overcome the car running too lean and also ability to handle more boost of the new map whilst adding a few more kw’s of power.

GIAC Extreme Tune
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/CAR/giac_logo-1.jpg
THIS is where ALL my modifications tie in! All I can say is WOW! This map was designed for the S3 and really is something else! The jump up of power from just the standard GIAC tune was good but this specific tune is mental! It is actually scary fast!
When driving it normally or cruising, it feels normal because of the turbo lag of the k04 plus abit more from the intake dealing with the extra air flow. But when you step on it is where the fun starts! Where the normal boost and power kicked in with the standard flash you get quiet a shove back but in that same period with the new tune, you just get shoved back harder and by the time you know it you are going ridiculously fast!
The tune also increased the boost quite abit, I have not really been paying attention but my boost gauge was holding at around 20psi! The intake also works harder and lets off the flutter or dose affect more often now then on the standard tune which is semi-enjoyable but definitely gets more attention now which sometimes I am not looking for.
Through the lower rev range, it drives normally so there are no issues with just having a relaxed drive which is a good quality because you don’t want to always be hit with torque when you slightly apply more throttle.
The wait for three weeks to get everything ordered in, installed and paid for was a hard time and eventually I wasn’t even excited or cared much anymore. But after picking up my car from the mechanics and having a test drive, it was really worth it and glad I went through with it. For those of you that would like to see the potential of this tune, here are two clips:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjyJL2z0EWk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mid9WT3Kfjw&feature=related
My mechanic told me that the only thing he’d be concerned about would be the DSG with this much power, but GIAC and a few other companies are currently working on the newer DSG units so they can offer a tune. So this is something I will definitely consider once introduced to the market.
Haven’t really driven it to have a good feel on other aspects, so I will provide another review on daily commuting abit later on.
Over and out

On a side note, went to my mates house i haven't seen in awhile and took him for a small drive and he was really impressed. He has an evo 8 mr running around 250kw and reckons from a roll it would be really close.
On another side note, when i was in lower gears and got abit up the rev range there was this vibrating from the engine and i felt it through the peddle abit as well but when i tried to replicate the problem with my mate in the car, it never came up. So hopefully its just the ECU still adapting.
Other then that still loving it =)

Appreciation/Shout Outs
Dedicated to all those that have helped me get to this point.
- Wal@EuroExhausts
Wal was GREAT help when ordering my Arqray catback exhaust. Always kept in contact with me and even agreed to meet up with me in person to save abit on shipping costs. He also called me a few days after i picked up the exhaust to see how everything went. He is not really in the business for profit and offered me the best price among other local and international sources as well as from Arqray themselves helping me save on import taxes. Highly recommended if sourcing a rare or high-end exhaust system.
- Tim@DubAddiction
A nice small business that has progressed to be much more and looks like its still growing! I have purchased quite a number of items from DubAddiction and he has answered all my inquires promptly. Hope to order more in the future.
- Lucas and the EuroSpeed crew
I'd like to thank Lucas as well as the EuroSpeed crew over there in Melbourne for pointing me in the right direction in regards to modifications as well as troubleshooting ideas. Lucas has called me a few times to talk about some of the issues I've been having and offering advice and the possible culprits to the problem. The EuroSpeed guys (Terrence, Tony and Hong) were also helpful in answering my questions in regards to the route i was taking. Great bunch and it was good to see commitment to come UP to Sydney on the dyno day.
- Arthur@Exoticars
Arthur is my mechanic and has been ALOT of help. He has installed a majority of my modifications and has never been one to push a sale of his products but has offered his opinion on numerous issues of concern. When i had problems with my car, he helped log data, replace a few parts without charge and even offered to help me when i had a major problem outside of working hours. Usually ALWAYS busy but can't recommend him highly enough.
- Ian@Rennenhaus
Have to admit i've only purchased the OSIR iPhone cover but he was great to deal with when i had interests in many of his products and was never put off when i decided not to go through. Hope to order more in the future thou =P

Great to be part of a community full of enthusiasts that are equally great to meet in person as well as on the forums whilst still always willing to provide their experiences and thoughts. Went to my mechanic today to have a small chat. Arthur diagnosed my car and found no faults and said the issues could be due to the DSG hitting the torque limiter. I asked him about a few future modifications i had in mind in the not to distant future and installation costs so now all that's left to do is save!
Also went today to pick up my stock downpipe just in case i decide to revert to stock later on down the track. As you can see from these pictures, the stock downpipe is VERY restrictive with two 600cel cats and 2.5inch diameter. The Eurospeed downpipe now has a single 200cel high flow cat with 3inch all the way through.

DRIVING IMPRESSIONS
So since the install a few weeks back, I have gotten a good feel of how the car runs. Daily driving is a breeze due to the lag, so it is easily tamable. Definitely doesn’t attract attention which is the sleeper status I was aiming for.
But to me, the lag teases you in a sense to push it further. Once you hit the sweet spot around 2,300+rpm, you instantly get shoved back a lot harder! It still surprises me how much extra power there is now because just stage 1 gave a good hit, but this just becomes stupid fast! Even in the higher gears, planting your foot down, you definitely feel the power. In no way is it close to how brutal Anthonys turbo r is, but from my impressions, it would be an equal race with the supercharged r32 but I still have a feeling my car would take it (from a roll of course).
Inside the cabin sounds like an airplane due to the intake sucking in air. The air just rushes through the entire engine bay and this is most noticeable in the first three gears from 1500+ rpms onwards. When full throttle, you hear the car roar and with every shift, it gives a small push forward, then torque kicks in to send you sinking back into your seat. VERY addictive! I will try to find time during the uni break to post video clips on the intake, exhaust and possibly in car footage.
At the dyno next weekend is when I find out how much of a difference all these modifications really translates to…

FUTURE MODIFICATIONS
I have taken it as far as I will go engine wise but I realized from the cruise, this new found power needs to be put to ground. I know many say it’s stupid to put too much power on a front-wheel platform but it just takes control and sensibility with your right foot. It’s a lot more fun (well to me at least) to understand how much input to put down then to go nuts once you’ve gained traction. But as the Pirelli slogan goes “Power is nothing without control” so that is what I am aiming for.
I am looking at the following to finish my project off:
Performance
- DSG Flash: although not really a performance modification, it was recommended by my mechanic to relieve stress on the DSG and reduce chances of it failing.
Aesthetics
My car has the go, now it just needs the look to match!
- VMR V710s: always LOVED the look of these so will finally get them and add my own small touch to it
- Pirelli P-Zero Tyres: could it be done any other way? hahah
- Inpro Smoked Indicators: nice small touch to add more character
Suspension
- .:R-Line Brakes: With all this extra power, brakes are definitely on the list to be upgraded because stock just doesn’t cut it.
- HPA SHS Coilovers: from research these offer the best blend between street and comfort for daily driving and since I don’t plan to track it, these would be the best option.
- BSH Pendulum Mount: The pendulum mount is to reduce more engine vibration and to help transfer the power better.
Maintenance
- Upgraded Diverter Valve: to ensure greater ability to handle the extra boost and reduce chances of a DV failure which is common on the GTIs
- Catch Can: Recommended by Lucas and from research, there are many accounts to how much excess oil builds up, so this will be for the long-term.
I basically have all these sourced, all that’s left to do is save =P
Cool! Looks like you almost got your beast sorted out, P!

Yeah paolo's Pirelli would be faster than your GTI now hey 10d..
I'd say maybe on par with 10d's or maybe abit faster, i think i run more boost and the tune i run is more aggressive. Hong from Melbourne told me that his stage 3 GTI just inches abit ahead of Tony's car so thats gotta be something else. I still need 10d to have a drive in my car to see what his impressions are, possibly at the dyno day next week

Would be keen to have a ride in your car to help me decide how far I want to take the engine mods. If the coilovers get fitted before the dyno day happy to offer you a ride in mine to see if you want to go something more hardcore than the HPAs.
I'm still hunting for the R32 brakes as well, might just end up ordering this new from overseas.

Third Dyno
Woke up really early and my mate and arrived early at 8:15 with Tendy as well. It was funny because when they were doing the first run, i got 125kw and i heard a few people laughing and even some random guys son was laughing and pointing at the screen, but Tony went up to tell the operators that what was happening was normal and to just push it, so redid it, and achieved 199kw! by then everyone was WHOA! I didn't think i would get over 200 but my last run i achieved 206.4kw atw so i'm stoked!

My graph is wonky thou, and i talked with Tony (from Melbourne also present on the day) and my mechanic and we're pretty sure it's the DSG hitting its limits, hence the misfiring. Will look into this pronto!

Just got off the phone with him and he sent me a pic of his graph. Alot cleaner looking then mine! could be down to the diverter valve because i'm still running the stock DV. I will upgrade to an aftermarket one as well as get colder spark plugs put in.
Good job mate!
Thanks!
Spewing I couldn't make it! That 's a big number! Any other GIAC cars there?
Tony who's part of the eurospeed crew in Melbourne was there! Pierre is GIAC as well not sure who else is as well thou. Seb and Derek was there to represent their brands so good to see some friendly competition
Doesnt HPA has the DSG flashes available?
Yep they do, but don't think the equipment to flash the DSG is in Australia yet and not even sure if they have a program for the revised DSG as well. Anthony would probably be able to chime in on this, but GIAC, Unitronic and REVO have DSG flashes for pre-09 vehicles but none for post.
Good job, buddy! That was fun. Now stop smiling. :)

Thanks Terence! i'm not sure about Tony being jealous, he did congratulate me thou but he took me in a drive in his car and he was pretty frustrated because to him it didn't feel right at all but his curve was very linear compared to my curvy one where between 4500-5150 BAM! VTEC KICKED IN YO! hahah
I've also been in contact with Dean during and after the dyno and we're equally as happy. He sent me his curve and it is smoother then mine so just need to look into a few things with my mechanic to get it up to scratch. I know Lucas is very happy hahah

First met with Tendy, Terrence, Kevin, Christina and Justin at a small cafe. VERY interesting business talk going on which left me intrigued, hope these plans go through. Then we drove to Detroit customs and Byza met us there. Very nice looking car Byza has! and generous enough to give me these bad boys:

- OEM Bi-Xenon Headlights
Bought AP's OEM bi-xenon lights a month back and finally installed them today. It took along time because i had to wait for TMTuning to send the adapters which came in yesterday. Got my right-hand man Tendy to help with the install which wasn't that bad at all. Nowhere near as bad as when my mates and i installed the BSH intercooler.

Review
WOW what a difference! almost like day time at night whilst driving hahah When i used to run the stock halogen lights, they offered pretty good visibilty. I then upgraded the bulbs to Osram nightbreakers and Philips X-treme power which offered better visibility on top of the stock bulbs that came equipped with the car. But once it became dar enough for the auto light feature to detect it was getting dark, is when i could really tell how much of a difference the bi-xenon lights made. It is really that much clearer.
These are comparison pics from inside the garage.

Need to sort out how to dip them lower thou because I think a few people were highbeaming me on the way home and Tendy noticed it as well whilst i was driving behind him. Not sure if if i dig the lighting of the highbeams so i was thinknig of changing them to the Philips bulbs but realised i rarely use the high beams so i'll just leave them.

bought them off AP for $1.5g but you also have to buy these adapters from TMTuning which is $70US. Definitely worth while. They are hard to come by especially OEM ones. With the install you'll save yourself money if you're good with DIY stuff and have a buddy with you =P you also need VAGCOM to enable them

1.5g rack? but roughly 1600 is not too bad. i'm guessing new parts cost alot more right?? and labour?? what is the paolo/10d labour rates? if i intend to purchase some accessories?
I seriously think there should be more places that installs this kinda stuff for a reasonable price, especially those shifter paddles, i have failed to buy them yet, because i refuse to do them myself lol

yeah around that $1,600 mark. Brand new would cost alot more plus they might grill you about not being able to run them legally beause you'll also have to install washers and blah blah blah i'd think a mechanic who knows his VW's would be able to do all the work you suggested. But just helps if you have the skills and are low on cash =P

Did u get them from ECS? Cuz im actually looking at getting the PCV fix done as well (im replacing the stuff that can go wrong/are weak in the car before I go ahead with all the mods so yeah....precautionary stuff first then go all out on the jetta! Hahaha)

i was talking with Dean and he said that there are these hite things that you manually adjust under the bonnet to dip them but have no clue what they are. If you find out let me know ;)
from memory there is a big white hex head adjuster just behind the headlights. its pretty easy to spot looking down on the lights from inside the engine bay.

from memory there is a big white hex head adjuster just behind the headlights. its pretty easy to spot looking down on the lights from inside the engine bay.

Adjusting the Headlights
OK so after getting highbeamed a few times and Tendy telling me that my lights were set too high, i decided to find a way to adjust them. When he told me they were too high, it brought to my attention not just that it'd be annoying other drivers on the road, but it would attract unnecessary attention from the popo. With the help from Tim, Terrence and Deans comments, i was able to bring them down abit.
Here is the white thingie majig that Tim was talking about.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0275.jpg
But unlike what Terrence said, there were U and D letters to bring the lights either up or down (duh!) adjusting them clockwise brings them up and counter brings them down. I used a T40 from my torx set to adjust them.
This is how they were sitting pre-adjustment
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0274.jpg
After adjusting just the right headlight

Both Adjusted
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0274.jpg
I am not exactly sure what a good height for them to be set at are, so if i keep getting high beamed then it'll be a trial and error game to get them sorted out.
PS one of the things i was dissappointed about was that the self-leveling feature doesn't work, they just stay put in their current position. Thou not necessary, i found it very nifty when i drove Christinas car. Oh well.
PPS feel free to use this on the DIY thread mods =P
self leveling requires a sensor front and rear to detect the level of the car. Would be a fun job to try and add those. (by fun I mean not fun at all :D )

Updated Grill Stripe
Whilst owning the Pirelli I've noticed many GTIs on the road (which isn't a bad thing). But i wanted somehing small to distinguish mine from the others out there. Not a major cosmetic modification but i've always wanted to do this and today found the time (even thou i should have been studying). After having a small DIY experience on my own by adjusting the headlights last night, I decided to tackle this on my own. I got some help from Byron and Cam with this.
First was removing the grill which is really easy, you just need a T25 torx and remove the four screws and pop it off easy. If you're completely noob, just check out Justin's guide. Here is the grill stock standard:
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0279.jpg
Here is a pic of the back of the grill:
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0280.jpg
Notice the red tabs, you'll be working with these
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0281.jpg
Slowly remove the tabs, one tab at a time. BE CAREFUL! I've read many cases of people over at the states who have broken their stripe by taking them off even being very careful, so you have to be very patient. I also suggest using a small screw driver or T10 torx between the red stripe at the front and push against the gloss black back.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0284.jpg
Slowly but surely, you will get to this stage with it off
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0286.jpg
Now my choice of colours hmmmmmmmmmmmmm just pop by a local supercheap or bunnings and go nuts with your selection of electrical tape.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0287-1.jpg
Decision made
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0288.jpg
Wrap the stripe with the tape and also push out any bubbles while you're at it
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0289.jpg
All wrapped up
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0290.jpg
Now cut off the excess tape and leave the tabs completely naked otherwise they won't fit through the holes when you put the stripe back.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0292.jpg
Use a hair dryer to enable the stripe to have more longetivity. Not too much thou otherwise it'll melt.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0293.jpg
Pop the stripe back onto the grill
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0295.jpg
Mount the grill back on and you're done!
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0297.jpg

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0302.jpg
easy peasy! well not so. The whole thing was time consuming and i am not a very patient person! i actually had to do it twice. The first one failed as there were many bubbles and the stripe wouldn't even fit through the holes because there was excess tape around the tabs. You can see from the tape i used how thick it was, so second time around i cut a long strip in half and used that. Byron said it'll last around 2 months because the heat from the engine creates more bubbles, but its completely reversible which score major brownie points. I plan to get it painted professionally once i get my custom plates later on during the year.

A few days back at home, i got into my car, turned the ignition on, and heard this loud rattling noise. So i got out checked underneathe and couldnt see anything, so i drove it up my driveway and the sound went away completely so i thought all was gravy. Then i took it out on Sunday to wash it, and found a bolt and nut lying on the floor. I contacted my mechanic and had the chance to drop by in this morning to get it checked out. It turned out to be from the downpipe, so mechanic put it on the hoist and put it back in and tightened everything also alligning my catback becauase before it was more towards the left of the exhaust cutout.
So i took a few shots of mods i couldn't before.

No clue what that is? Just getting my mechanic to install them. Anything I should tell them specifically?
Any decent mechanic that removes a driveshaft should know that the nuts/bolts are single use so I wouldnt stress too much there. If theyre not retorqued properly it can damage the bearing/hub/driveshaft.
Depending on how they choose to go about it the mechanic doesnt always need to remove the driveshaft anyways. Ive done a few mk5 coil installs and have always been able to get away without it.

ok so i'm getting my coilovers installed next Saturday and was just looking for your opinions. This is how my car sits at monster truck stock height:

and this is my driveway:
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w134/suprizepackidge/IMG_0218.jpg
How low do you think i can go without scraping my front lip? one of the first issues i had with the stock height is that i could not go drive into the garage front on because the steepness scraped it so now i have to reverse it now. I think the lowest you can go with the HPA kit is 35mm? but i was thinking a 20mm drop in the beginning then see from there. Whatcha reckon?
stephen8512
20-06-2010, 01:07 AM
My driveway is as steep as that, if not a tad steeper. My KW's have been dropped so I have about 1.5 finger gap all round. I havent had any issued with scrapage yet but I'll see. I think mine was dropped 25mm? It's trial an error P...thats what Ima do with mine!

Paolo I don't think the HPA SHS can go that low. If you look at pics of my car, the rear suspension it already at it's lowest point. In order to go lower you have to do what Kevin/REV555 did on his car and remove the bump stops.

Updated Stripe and Open Fog Grills
After contemplating, i dropped my grill stripe and open fog grills off at detroit customs to get painted professionally. Great service, i recommend them but theyre usually busy most of the time but since these were small items, it didn't take that long and good to have them on during the meet last night.

Very happy with how they came out. I couldn't really appreciate them until i took pictures this morning because it was dark at the warhouse last night. With the open fog grills, i couldn't take the look of the colour of them. They stood out so much compared to the gloss black of the grill or the black magic pearl of the entire car so i wanted to match it with the grill. Looks abit on the more glossy side but i still like it alot better then the plain black that they came with. When i put the electrical tape over my stripe, there were still imperfections here and there and it would eventually look too bodgy so since i was already at detroit getting my open fogs done, then i thought i might as well get this done as well.
Another update soon mofo!

After contemplating selling my catback and upgrading due to the lack of noise, I was talked out of it and Tendy told me i could try this modification which would be alot cheaper and would be louder so decided to go to Liverpool exhaust today to get it done. This place is exhaust manufacturing central! can't believe they owned the whole area with one garage consisting of the installs whilst the rest were for fabrication and mass production. There were exhausts EVERYWHERE! on th walls, on the floor, outside EVERYWHERE! i was really surprised. The owner was very nice and helpful and almost spewed when i told him how much my downpipe cost hahahah i wouldn't get a full exhaust from here but they had more then enough experience to do what i wanted.

Review
Driving it sounds almost the same as before but abit louder, not overtly loud but still noticeable. When giving it a squirt thou, it just roars and sounds more raw. Sounds good when you give it some gas to hear the roar then let off to hear the intake after. It may have lost some of the bassy note which it had before. It is alot louder but not enough to get unwanted attention. I'm happy with it now as you can't expect too much from a little 4 cylinder to begin with anyway.
