Help!! My Tiptronic Transmission needs rebuild after 29000 km's!! Advice Please
Could I please request your advice......we have a 2008 model Golf Pacific 2.0 FSI Tiptronic (6 speed auto) It has done 29000 km's and the warranty expired 6 months ago.
After noticing the gear would not shift upwards last week I had it checked by specialise transmission repairer who told me I need new Solenoid Valve block.....he suggested I try to get it under warranty.....I took it to South yarra VW where we bought it....they tried to insinuate it was my fault becasue I had last service of vehicle done at Ultra tune (not the dealer) even thoguh they are authoised to do handbook service intervals. They then claimed becasue we did so such low km's this was not good for transmission as they are designed for long distance autobahn driving!
They checked it and 2 days later advuised the transmission needs a whole new rebuild and will cost nealry 6k!!! I fainted....as I dont have that much money laying around!! After pleading they agreed to submit request for assiatnce from VW Australia to contribute given the car has done so few km's.
I am still awaiting the outocme....but can any of you advise if this is common issue with this model GOLF? What recourse if any do you think I have.....my wife and I battlers and saved for years to buy a good car we thought would last us a good 10 years if cared for without any major issues.....we are in despair and dont know what to do!
Sorry to hear about your troubles, and can genuinely feel for your frustrations. At this stage, try to be patient with the outcome from VW Australia before you let the monetary aspect circulate in your mind.
The short answer is that every dealer has different approaches to these things. Some people talk of success in getting things under warranty, others no. It is an amazingly low amount of kms for a warranty period, but as long as you have serviced at the regular intervals which in your case is based on time and not km's, then there should be no real reason why the transmission should just pack up. However, dont know enough about your driving style etc. It will be a challenge now the car is out of warranty but fingers crossed.
Some people report trouble free motoring with these gearboxes, others have some issues at various kms.
I would recommend you get a second opinion as well, just to be absolutely certain, particularly if the prognosis is for a full transmission rebuild. Dealerships will charge an arm and a leg. If VW Australia come back ruling against, then I would avoid the dealership, and you might get it cheaper elsewhere.
Sorry to hear. If VW don't come to the party warranty wise, do yourself a favour and take it to an independant automatic transmission specialist. They will be able to either:
1) Diagnose the issue and repair or replace the faulty part
2) Source a rebuilt or 2nd hand replacement gearbox for you
Automatic transmissions are much the same amongst different manufacturers, so don't go thinking that its a special gearbox because its a VW.
And they will do it at a far lower cost than the VW dealership:
