DIY: BSH Competition Catch Can Install + Drainage For Large Intakes (EVOMS)

guys, you'll have to bare with me, this is a work in progress!

so, i recently purchased a bsh competition catch can off another forum member (brand new, never fitted) and decided to mount it over the weekend. straight off the bat, i hit a brick wall. now, theres two i guess common places to mount these catch can; the first one listed on the bsh website will get you to mount it to the left of the engine, behind the drivers headlight, refer to pic.

this spot is great for US spec cars only as they don't have a charcoal filter like the EU spec cars, so this leave your only option for the spot where most guys mount the 42DD cans is in this same position on the passenger side. for most intake systems, this is a great spot, plenty of of mounting points and vacant space. there are heaps of write ups on this location, check out the DIY thread further down for the actual install of the piping.

the issue i had, and i'm sure may other will too, when you have a large intake system such as the EVOMS V-Flow, it doesn't leave much space and in my case, no space at all to mount the catch can in that spot, so the search continues!

so this got me thinking of places to mount the catch can and after consulting with Regal Autosport in the UK (www.regal-shop.co.uk/vw/) and they informed me of their mounting location. it mounts up under the intake pipe attached to the battery box, depending on the intake system heat shield, it does require a bit of trimming to allow the plumbing to feed through. you can see the location in this next pic, under the 90 degree bend in the intake system.

with this being a work in progress, i haven't had a chance to mount my can just yet, but i'll upload pics as the install comes along!

in terms for the actual can itself, one thing it lacks is a proper draining system as oppose to that stupid allen key plug design! after about 4-5 trips to stores like bunnings, supercheap auto and the alike, i ended up at ENZED and purchased a male-to-male nipple, ball valve and 90 degree bend with a hose attachment. i plan on running a hose that'll pop out in my open fog grills that should make things heaps easier to drain. i've attached my invoice for reference if you wanna buy this same gear. make sure you wrap the threading with teflon tape to keep a tight seal. i've gone and painted my all black to match the catch can, so it doesn't look like i have a kitchen sink in my engine bay! haha will post more pics shortly!

nice stealth spot but i'd imagine the catch can getting very warm in the position which renders it a fair bit more useless, you really want to cool down the blow by / gasses so it can change from gas to liquid again.

With the can warm / heated it counter acts the change in gas particles to liquid.

To improve on that position is to maybe heat wrap the can so it can be insulated by the heat emitting from the near by exhaust manifold / turbo and if you are pedantic enough heat wrap the manifold and dump pipe to minimise heat dispersion within the engine bay and or ceramic coat it.

On another note people have relocated the charcoal canister making space for the catch can on the other original position and or putting it further down the front right or left grill area behind the front bar.
