    Broken CV Joint

    Hi Guys
I think my CV has shite itself. Not sure how long its been like this but I noticed a peculiar sound after an intensive drive to the snow on the week end.
What are these worth and will it last until I get it fixed this week?
Any knowledge or experiences are appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jas

Im not sure what to make of that Jason. Looks like its spitting grease where the CV bolts onto the box. Is there any noticeable break/split anywhere?

I should have cleaned it up but it was a pretty tight squeeze for me. It seems to be coming from the cv but not sure where. You can see the rotation of grease on the shroud around the joint. It looks like the seal around where the bolts are located has ruptured??? Need to get it checked ASAP.

definitely grease from your inner joint. With inertia , grease can seep out from even the smallest of cracks in the rubber.

Check rubber boot for obvious cracks , especially in the grooves. Also check the clamp is straight and not splayed.

Is your car overly lowered ? this can put extra stress on driveshafts / cv joints / inner joints etc

Yeah. It is lowered. I did read from golfmkv this can cause extra stress on parts

You get that with high hp fwd... Most fwd I've owned at some stage had to have the driveshaft replaced.
If you see it early enough you might prolong the life by just replacing the CV boot joint which is the rubber but usually by the time it starts making a noise it's too late.
I was told the driveshaft prices varied for the GTI depending on the engine code. All up for mine was just over $400 with labour, part alone was almost 300$.
    Hope that helps...

    Cheers frenky. Appreciate the info.
From what I hear there isn't any loud noise as yet. I'll call my mechanic 2moro. Thanks again.

I had the right front rubber go twice on my WRX (not lowered). The CV itself was fine, but it kept splitting the rubber (had the car 11.5years 120K kms , had to replace that rubber twice). I think it was also due to heat from the nearby (3") exhaust that caused it to fail prematurely (compared to the LHS one & rear ones).

That's interesting. My dump pipe is located right there. From the pics though it doesn't look like the grease is coming from the rubber but the bolted metal section? Like I said I need to take a look on a hoist. The cars has done 96k.
