    GTI engine in a 118TSI?

    Hi All,

After fighting for several months with VW Australia over a blown engine I have given up.... I love my 118TSI to bits, but with the engine in such bad condition I can't get rid of it. I have lost all faith in these dual charged engines, and want to move to a 2.0Ltr TSI. Unfortunately the money I'll lose by selling the 118 with a blown engine plus the difference in price of the GTI is way too much, so changing the engine is my only option.

So, I have found the engine I want, but I am unsure of what else I need. I have been offered the ECU from the GTI in the deal plus all engine accessories, but do I really need it? Also, the engine comes from a 2011 GTI DSG; Mine is a 2009 118TSI Manual. Will the manual gearbox from the 118 fit straigh in on the GTI engine? or will i need a new gearbox or some kind of kit? I am looking at changing clutch and flywheel.

    Much appreciated,

    elche.

    Wow Elche,

This is so unfortunate thing, the MK6 platform is very similar one model to the other, I don't really think you will have a problem,

But I strongly suggest you to get the same gearbox you had before, or keep the current if possible,

Second get close to a really good workshop like Exoticars, City Performance, Ramspeed, etc, only those guys will be able to tell you in an accurate way what you need,

    Good luck!,
Keep us posted, this is a very interesting project now, I know it's hard, and annoying sometimes but try to enjoy it!
    Best of luck man!

Thanks for the info Mate. It's a very frustrating situation but exciting at the same time. I was already looking at options to mod the 118, but was not expecting to start off by getting a GTI engine
The price for the engine and DSG combo is double the price of the engine alone, so I won't be going for the DSG + I like the manual box better anyways...

Have you heard of BWAauto? I'm taking the car there in the morning just to see what is really wrong with the engine, and what it would cost to salvage it. I don't think fixing it will be a smart idea though, and as much as I love the power delivery of the 118 i've lost total faith in them.

I'll have a chat with some of the guys you mentioned tomorrow and give an update.

    Regards,

    elche

You'll be happy to know BWA know their golfs. It's a good starting point.

Interesting, good luck with the changeover I imagine it should be a relatively straightforward process (all things being equal). Are axles etc common amongst models?

My only question at this stage is how long do you plan on keeping it? I envisage that it would be something quite difficult to onsell down the track.

    Not worth it.
Will cost a lot more than the purchase price of the engine and you will find lots of stuff along the way that will need to be changed.
Then after all the work required it will still be a bitsa.

Sell up the 118 and buy a MK5 GTI if you cant afford a mk6

    get engine fixed under warranty
    sell car
    buy GTI

No way would I attempt that sort of swap I can see so many differences in hardware and then there's the software too and getting the ECU happy with whats in the car and then the programming to suit . Expect to be reamed hard and deep

Then you come to insurance, you'll have a difficult time trying to get insurance from any mainstream company so it will cost you big time
Getting the engine swap will be hard to given the increase in capacity and you'll need to have it engineered and the meet emissions too
Then when you go to sell the car no one will touch it

Is there some reason VW won't fix the current engine given their poor track record ?

Then you need to think about re sale later down the track, fix it, sell it, move on

So why wont VW replace your motor? a GTI engine swap sounds good and would be a straight fit

I'm no expert but I would find it hard to believe that a gti engine will fit straight into a 118 car... I would imagine many gti parts will be used specifically to handle the extra power from the higher output engine. I think you'd find alot more problems and spend alot more cash over time!!

Some problems you have identified already.

Like most have said, get the car fixed under warranty and get a mk5/mk6 gti instead. As I agree with the part about insurance, it will be hard to insure a car with a different specified engine, unless you don't tell them.
