I'd think it's just software and wouldn't be surprised if it could be enabled in Otis engineering.

Might be worth having a chat with VW Central.

I'd be almost certain it's nothing more than software.

The media screen obviously already receives data from the ECU and sensors, as it displays fuel consumption etc. I'd presume it potentially can receive all the other values too, so long as there's the appropriate firmware to either call for them and/or translate into a display. So really I'd like to think it's as simple as flashing the newer firmware onto the current unit, as we should already have all the hardware required so to speak.

That being said, there may be a case of small hardware changes that the new firmware was written for, but won't function correctly on the old hardware (even though they do the same thing). Think drivers on a PC - change your video card without updating the drivers for it and it won't function, even though the old and new one had the same function.

Considering the "blue tech" or whatever it's called - gauge that's accessible via similar routes as the power gauge in the US videos, it's probably software. I imagine the US folks got the power gauge, and we got the blue tech gauge. Perhaps to test market response? I'd have thought they'd do it the other way around considering there seems to be more kerfuffle in the US about the emissions scandal (thus giving them the blue-Eco gadget)

    /my two cents
