Visit your Volkswagen Dealer for a Sat Nav Map Update

Finally, VW are providing map updates. At our last service a few weeks ago the CSR said there was negotiation happening. Didn't think anything of it though.

    Body of the email...

Visit your Volkswagen dealer for any paid service and receive your complimentary map update for your Golf valued at up to $150!*

The Volkswagen Sat Nav Update Plan helps our customers to stay on track with the freshest maps available. During the first 5 years of ownership, customers will receive the freshest map available at no charge when they come in for service at their authorised Volkswagen Dealer.

Australian roads are constantly growing and changing. Whether itís the daily drive to work, family holiday, or a weekend road trip with friends, your vehicle should be equipped with the freshest map to get from A to B using the most efficient route available. Volkswagen map updates for your Golf are released bi-annually to ensure the latest and greatest map data is available each time you visit your Volkswagen Dealer.

EDIT: THIS IS FOR A MK7 GOLF WITH DISCOVER MEDIA SYSTEM. If you have a different model, use the drop down stuff on the left hand side to change

You can download the latest maps yourself for free - all you need is a PC, internet connection, and ability to edit the contents of an SD card. The dealer provided me the below website, which is where they get the update from. I'd recommend downloading it in 5 separate parts rather than the single download - the hosting website seems to throttle each download, so for me right now as a test I can only achieve ~300kB/s downloading the single file, or I could have all 5 parts downloading at the same time at 300kB/s each....if that makes sense.

Anyway, download this, then remove the SD card from your glove box and replace everything on it with what you've downloaded (after you've extracted it from the compressed archive).

Dodgy, slow site. When eventually got through General Error, and tunnelled through the site, it wanted to charge US$99 + shipping. (Hardly Free) Thanks, but will stay with VW Aus offer.

    Paul,
Is there any chance of getting a copy of that email. I have been asking about updates for my MY14 Golf for the last two services with no success,
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
PM me your email address and I'll forward it to you. Yes, it was only a few weeks ago that we had one of our 2 Golfs serviced (2014 TDi wagon) and I asked as usual. As mentioned above they said VW were working on a solution. And we discussed lifetime updates if you buy a 100$ standalone unit. Car owners spend ~ 40 grand and are not eligible for updates.

The email says limited to the first 5 years. Better than nothing for most owners I guess.

Yeah that sounds like an issue on your end mate. Website loads no problem at work and on my home PC right now. You don't need to 'tunnel through' the site - the page that link directs you to is the page containing the download links.

Admittedly, they are from late last year. That website is literally where the dealer directed me to. Make of that what you will.

I downloaded this one, it was 350mb. They have somewhat revised the map and squeezed it down from 4.6gb download

This is the result. I just had to back up my old one which was 2016, emptied the SD card and copied over the new one. It is now 2016/2017

The May 2016 update seems to have been removed. Via other methods I managed to download 2 different updates. For anyone who has download the 'Discovery Media' updates, what was the file name when it was downloaded. I have:

    P34_N60S3MIBS2_ROW_NT.7z
    0635_V05_1911c.xROW2.7z

Which one is correct (if either)

    Thx
    Tony
