Reversing camera hatch cover not fully closing

I’m experiencing a problem with the hatch emblem that covers the reversing camera on my Golf. It opens well enough and the camera functions properly but when I move the gear selector to Drive or Park, the hatch only closes part way. The camera fully retracts. It will eventually close fully after I put it into and out of reverse a few times.
Can anyone suggest a fix for this?

I have the exact same issue with my Mk7 GTI where only sometimes it gets stuck and if I put in in reverse then drive or park it goes back into place. I was quoted nearly $1500 from VW as they claim that the whole camera mechanism needs to be replaced.

Id love to know if others have had similar issues and what the fix was.
