Wish this car had more room around it at GAF. It deserves more space!
Your right Justin, if there was one thing that I was not entirely stoked about is the inability for the organisers to arrange the variants very well. I understand that it is a really hard thing to do, but with some pre-registration, I am sure that we could get cars of similar type closer together - or - we arrange a meet in the library car park and then enter in a staged manner when we have a good group of MK1's there. Maybe something for us to work on next year.
At the end of the day it had space though!

Mick... thats a beauty!
How long did it take you to restore it to current state?
If you dont mind me asking... Roughly what ballpark were the costs?
All though no doubt, no amount of $$$ can be placed on such a project!
Thanks Pat. I imported it from Perth (a few years ago it was painted). It has been here about 4 months and have not worked too hard on it to reach where we are now.
It is hard to say how much this car has cost because I have had a lot of parts from the old green car. But I would suggest that you would need to spend $10K to get a decent slightly modified MK1. Either you buy one completed for that or you buy in at $2.5K shell and then do it yourself.
I don't like to think how much I spend on my MK1's, cos I probably should spend it on my kids education.
I have given myself a timeline now of interior to be completed by Christmas and the engine conversion by Easter. If I don't have these milestones I never get anywhere.
I might even pull out my first love over summer and invest a bit of love back into her.

Thats still dedication right there.
I have been looking for a Mk1 for around 3-4 months now as a little project but just havent found what I am looking for.
Also thought about a Mk3 for a while mainly because of its engine, but manuals are so hard to find in the old VR6.
Excuse my ignorance, but what car is that in the pic???
Been looking at it for clues, even that little italian flag sticker on the back window isnt giving it away!! lol..
Casually asking the Mrs how much I have spent she retorted; "I can't tell you how much money it has cost, but I have lost 50% of my weekends ever since you have owned one" so take that as you will.
The old girl is a 1968 Sunbeam Imp Sport, 930cc rear engine/drive, Weber carb. These were the 'up market' version of the Hillman Imp. Made in Scotland, they did not survive in competition with the first front wheel drive micro cars of the time, such as the mini. More info here http://www.imps4ever.info/
(the italian flag is the Club Motori Italia colours, one of the sporting car clubs we were members of in Hobart).
If you are serious about getting an older VW, you need to have your wits about you, and get educated. I suggest trawling vwwatercooled, clubgti, mk1ownersclub and vortex and then dive in once you are a bit clued in because otherwise you will have someone take advantage of you.
