[How To] Upgrade your RNS510 Rev (A,B,C) to Firmware 3810 and VW V5 Maps

    Hi All,

I thought I should give something back to the VWGolf community, since I must admit I have been trolling a fair bit lately

I can't drive until March 1, so in anticipation for that date, I thought I might as well update my RNS510 to the latest official firmware and the latest VW V5 Maps from Sensis.

I'd just like to give a big thanks to David (xc17ed) for helping out with this one.

The firmware provided for this guide is only for RNS510 REV A, B, C.

Revision D and above will need a different version.

After completing this guide your RNS510 of Revision A, B, C will now have:
    • The latest official VW firmware 3810.
    • The latest Sensis VW V5 Maps 7679.

Files you will need to download:
    sw 3810.nrg
    VW V5 Nav.iso

These can be downloaded from my iDisk account via this link:

So what you will need to do is, make sure you have Nero or imgburn installed, for Mac Users, I am sorry ,but you will have to use Windows as the Firmware image is in .nrg format which is a Nero proprietary image format.

or Download a 15 day Free Trial of Nero from here

I would recommend burning the firmware image to a CD as the RNS510 seems to be a little bit fussy with media types.

Open Nero > Recorder>Burn Image. Browse to the file sw 3810.nrg (See image)

I would burn the disc at a low speed 4X-8X to prevent any hiccups during the installation process.

Insert the burnt firmware image into your RNS 510 DO NOT put the key into the ignition, simply turn the RNS510 on so it is using the battery. You will then see the RNS510 reading the disc and begin the installation process. It will take about 55 minutes to install. At one point it may look like it is frozen, but don't worry it is still running.

    I have attached some photos of the installation process;

    New Splash Screen!

Confirming the new firmware has been installed, by holding down setup to access the 'secret' menu

You will notice now a new splash screen upon reboot. I have found the RNS510 loads up much faster and seems far more responsive, it really is a worthwhile upgrade. Everything else worked fine, I have the VW/Skoda OEM Bluetooth kit and experienced no problems. I also have the Kufatec TV Tuner and that wasn't effected either.

Once the firmware installation process is complete, you will need to reinstall the maps as that is all that was removed after upgrading the firmware.

To burn the maps, follow the same process above in Nero.

For Mac Users, this can be done through Disk Utility, which is found in Applications>Utilitiesisk Utility.

In Disk Utility, click Images, Burn, browse to the VW V5 Nav.iso file and burn. (see image).

Once you have the new V5 Maps (7679) you will see a speed sign, which will now give you information about the speed limit on the street you are travelling on.

Please let me know if you have any questions or encounter any problems during the installation process

    Deanski,

My 'versions' of 3810 won't show the map speed limit on the A revision unit I have. However. I'm prepared to download yours and give it a go. (Not that it's a big issue...but...well, why not?)

Well done on the "How to" and the links.

My speed thing wasn't showing initially I turned on in advanced settings show demo or something and went back to the main screen and it appeared again. Perhaps it's a little glitch, but now it's on permanently. You can turn the demo mode off once you see the speed sign.

Let me know how you go.
