If it was serviced at VW then it should have had the DSG Service - VW have a very strange policy about seperating any aspect of servicing when sticking to the routine service intervals. However, strange if its not itemised and all the other tasks performed were?

For peace of mind, I generally like to take out pretty thorough services on any car I purchase, just to get it back to square one so to speak - call the dealer who performed the 60 00 km service, they should be able to tell you. Generally, the DSG service, providing no major problems costs anywhere between 400-600 depending on where you go. Main cost is in the DSG Oil which can be close to $30 a Litre, the flush and fill requires close to 6L in total, new DSG Oil filter (around the $25 mark) plus labour.

DSG box, at first i didnt like it, after 3-4 months, now i love it.

Must be a sign that im getting old

No problems with the DSG system at all, only negative is the DSG service which will cost a little more....

Is there anything i should be looking for when buying? Are these really that bad? Or do you only hear about the ones that fail and there are plenty of OK DSG cars with decent KM's?

I was after a VW for a daily because of the build quality but am now having second thoughts..

    Cheers...
one thing to note, you're up for timing belt change at the 105,000km service. I got it done for $1200 inc a new water pump (independent always does that, dealers will charge you an extra $450).

and as I always say, find out the history of the car, mine is very last Mk5 (w/DSG) and has 108,000kms on it in 2 and a bit years. Lots of kays but because of my commute, i'm straight onto the freeway and then 200kms a day sitting in 6th. Compare that to a chap who has done 40,000kms in 4 years and it's all city driving which is way worse for the engine and gearbox. My 2c

Agree with you on this one. Yea my 120d have 130k on the clock and it's an my08 model but it's all highway K's. Like you said it's better than for someone who travelled about 30k but all well and truly city driving style. Alot of wear and tear oon engine component.

Golf Mk5 autogear box - help

    Hi All,

I have a 04 Golk Mk5 with auto gearbox that is now gerky shifting up/down. I suspect it is the mechatronic.

Can anyone suggest where I can get a re-cond gearbox in Sydney to replace?

    Many Thanks!

209,000 GTI dsg not a single problem

Mate at the gym 280,000ks roughly only serviced dsg at 150,000 again not a problem

Taxis in Europe have more than half a million ks on their dsg and still going strong

When something goes wrong people talk rave about it, if its fine no one cares

We traded our Mk5 2.0 TDI with DSG (bought new in 05 sold with 110k in Dec 08).Even the VW dealer who bought the car was amazed the vehicle had made it that far without DSG problems! We did have it serviced at huge cost at 60K. The also had a peculiar "doink"sound (from new) that baffled everyone but the combination of the 2.0Turbo diesel and the DSG made an exceptional drive once it started to move.

The DSG on my pirelli was perfect. Could not fault it, the shifts were so good and you don't notice it half the time in D.

I didnt drive my car hard at all, and had moderate stop and start traffic. But when it came time to overtake, man the DSG drops to the right gear and youill be in front in no time.

I recon there was just a few bad boxes, but my experience with DSG has been perfect.
