    RNS510 & Bluetooth - Voice Control Harness

    Info is releveant for
    * Mk6 Golf
    * 9w7 BT Module
    * RNS510
    Hi everyone,

    For those of you who are the same boat, I have retro-fitted both a 9w7 bluetooth kit and RNS510 into my car. But voice control will only work for the bluetooth (button on steering wheel) but voice control wont work on the RNS510 (star button), as much as you yell, she says "pardon".
    And you probably worked out that its because the microphone is only connected up to the bluetooth.

    If you haven't bothered to wire up the microphone yourself (like me), this guy on ebay is now selling a harness which can now allow your microphone to work for both phone and rns510.

    I just bought myself one.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Hello Ian

    Thanks for the link
    How hard will installation be? Do you need to wire up to microphone?
    I also have fitted RNS 510 and have not been able to use voice control, Bluetooth was factory fitted

    Cheers

    I only ordered mine tonight. But it wont be hard. When I retrofitted my mic and 9w7 bluetooth, the kit came with a harness that allowed the bluetooth to integrate with the headunit (which would be installed in your car too). This harness will just replace that harness, but is wired so it now bridges the microphone between both bluetooth and headunit for voice control. You just need to ensure the mic is reconnected to to this harness. It will be piss easy. Lots of instructions online on how to retrofit the bluetooth kits etc which will provide guidence on what you need to look out for when replacing the harness.

    Hi,
    Item arrived in the mail last week. Inspection of the cables showed they were of a high quality, equal to or if not better then VW OEM parts.

    A bonus for me was not only have they built a bridge to wire the 1 microphone for both RNS and BT, the new harness also has wiring to support the MDI connections too, which means I could reattach the MDI plug into the orginal plug. (See my thread about this when I installed my BT.)
    http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread....-not-working-(

    Installation was easy. Just replace the BT harness that came with the BT kit with this one. Except plug the micrphone into one end, and then connect the RNS and BT with the bridge to both allow access to the mic. (See white plugs in pic)

    Works a treat. I now have voice control on both. However after getting the RNS voice control working I realised something. The RNS voice control allows you to do the same voice control for your phone as the BT. IE. Dial Number, Dial Contact, List Missed calls etc. Because it actually talks too and accesses the BT module. So I am thinking now, maybe I should have just connected the Mic to the RNS and saved me a couple of bucks. BUT...that would have meant I would have needed to code the mic button on the steering wheel to be a mute button again. But I rather like having both working.

    Anyway here are some random pics of the install...

    I just recieved mine yesterday. Now whats all this connecting stuff again ? ): Im confused now sadly. I hope to have the RNS510 H model soon. Do I still need the harness I bought, to add with the new RNS510 H ? I also will have the (bluetooth kit in with new RNS. So to now connect voice activation, and also have my controls at the multi funtions, on steering wheel, I need to have the 2nd Harness. This right guys ?

    Spydar is the man on this & having had similar concerns it really depends on what model BT you're going to use.
    I think you can only install the 9W2 or early 9w3 model BT to your car.The 9w7 model isn't compatible with the red MFD2 display you have in your 08 R32. Hope this doesn't confuse you further. As for the RNS510, that should just plug straight into the existing wiring plugs of the car I would imagine.

    Hi,
    My review is based on having the following:
    * MK6 Golf (White MFD)
    * BT Module 9w7
    * RNS510

    I'm afraid that for the Mk5 guys, this thread isn't going to really help you out. As In-Black said, the red MFD is only compatible with earlier generation VW BT modules like the 9w2 or 9w3, and even then you have to check that the right model within that series of BT modulkes so you getthe right one to work with a red MFD. Thats all I really know about mk5's sorry.... I have a mk6 so I haven't bothered to learn about the older generation stuff.

    this link may help:

    OK Its all making sense now. Thanks guy's. The downfall of having a Mark5 I can still have the RNS H Type, put in my car anyhow, right guy's ? Just wont have the up to date BT I guess. Surely though, there is a way around this Mark5 problem, please dont be smart by saying yeah get a Mark6,,,, Ok how hard is it to get the 9w7 or some other future BT to become compatable with the Red MFD ? Is this really NASA stuff ? Surely not. I want the latest RNS and the bloody latest BT to work in my m5 r32, If I have to go to Wolfsberg and have the Mark6 wiring put in,,, so be it. mmmmm there is an Idea lads OR AT VAG. Cant always have what we want sometimes I guess. So its the old 9w3 ? Or 9w2 i need people ? Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllppppppppppp
