GROUP NOW CLOSED

After running numerous group buys for these Audi R8 coil packs, it's time to move on to other things.

After almost 12 months and more shipments than I can remember one of our forum sponsors has now decided to stock these parts locally.

So if you want a set of R8 coil packs (or other parts from ECS) please contact Stuart from BMR Autowerkes:

28 Hampstead Rd
Auburn NSW 2144

OK so I've got a couple of sets confirmed.

Anyone else interested as I'm ordering in the next 24 hours.

It looks like I might have to resurrect this group buy. I've got a number of sets landing in the next couple of days, however looks like there's a few people that missed out last time.

So if you're interested in picking up a set of R8 coil-packs for your tuned Golf please let me know.

Cost is same as before $125 pick-up/drop off in Adelaide or add $15 postage Australia-wide.

Yes these are the R8 coil packs. Parts that are going to be ordered from ECS are: http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/06E905115E/ES2538571/

These are also suitable for Golf 5/6 2.0T as per list of compatible models above.

hey mate.

you can get a set of 4 from here which is cheaper than ECS. Should be about 80 something + postage. Should come under $100? This is where I got mine from (thanks to Lucas_R)

Last lot I got from ECS as there were other parts being orders also.

Plus you know you're getting legit OEM parts.

Freight on ECS is quite a bit cheaper when you're purchasing a number of sets so will stick with ECS at this stage.

Single set price there's not much in it - both ECS and europaparts will have them landed for $155.

Dillon,

No problems. I'll be able to work out a better deal on freight for 3 sets for sure.

Others,

I'll send out PM's with payment details in the next couple of days once I've confirmed exact postage cost in Australia. First group buy is landing tomorrow/Wed so once I've received this I'll know exact weights/dimensions and nail down freight/postage costs within Australia.

If I can then get payments in soon after I'm looking to limit it to around 10 sets to keep the value of imported goods under $1,000 (so we don't get slugged GST and import duties).

I'll hit the button as soon as I receive payment for 10 and any additional will go into a 3rd shipment. Typically need a min 4 sets at a time to land them at a decent price.

I'm up for 4 as well. Would it be possible to add 4 NGK PFR7S8EG plugs to the order?

Tigger73
02-04-2013, 11:30 PM
OK there have been a few requests to add spark plugs to the order. There's certainly not as big a saving on spark plugs as coil packs purchasing from the US, however it doesn't appear to change the freight cost by that much.

So if people want to add the following item it can be included for ~$45 to an order for a set of coil packs:

Spark Plug - Set Of Four
High quality laser platinum spark plugs (#PFR7S8EG)
Brand: NGK
ES#: 2561854
Mfg#: PFR7S8EGKT

Unless anyone has a strong preference for any other spark plug - trying to keep things simple.

By the looks of things we may have enough for a couple of orders...

Do you have the full NGK part# and possibly ECS item# for these ones?

Again happy to include these in the order but its up to the individual to make sure the parts are right for their car (i.e. all care and no resopnsibility).

Cars running K03 turbo's:

NGK BKR7EIX Iridium (2667) (iridium version of the stock plug gapped at 0.032)

Cars running K04 turbo's:

As I thought, there's a number of different options for spark plugs (even for each vehicle).

So here's how I suggest things work:

Do your own research - http://www.ecstuning.com/
Work out which set of spark plugs is best for your vehicle/tune (ES part number please)
Add $5 to the $US price to cover any additional shipping costs.
Add this to your coil pack order and advise ES part# with purchase / shipping details

On other news the first GB landed today so I've got a box waiting for me when I get home tonight.

I'll have accurate weights/dimensions now so will be able to finalise the on-shipping charges and any discounts I've been able to negotiate with ECS.

Will PM everyone with payment details and final amounts. Good news is it looks like it may work out a bit cheaper than first estimate (due to quantity).

Once payments have been received, the parts will get ordered.

I'm in for spark plugs....

Did you want coil packs with that?

The offer for spark plugs is only for those people adding them to a set of coil packs.

I haven't done the exact numbers but you'd probably have to add around $20-$25 to the US$ price for the spark plugs to allow for freight and then postage in Aus.

You can probably do better off ebay if you just want spark plugs...

For those interested in a set of spark plugs, I just noticed on ECS that there are 2 listings for the PFR7S8EG spark plugs (set of 4):

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/PFR7S8EG/

ES#:2561854 $42.39
ES#:2568560 $52.95

I can't pick any difference between the two, besides the price....

Yes I found the same when I did a search for "PFR7S8EG"

If you have a look at the applications tab, however the cheaper coil packs say they are suitable for B8 A4 and EOS only.

Whereas the ones that are $10 more say all Audi/VW 2.0T.

I'd check direct with ECS before ordering.

The other thing is the cheaper ones are in stock whereas the others are 1 day away.

It may be that these are the same thing but from different suppliers....

Only way to be sure is to ask ECS.

If you are ordering one of these please confirm the ECS part number (ES#????) on placing order.

As expected UPS couldn't find the address, for some reason they are the only courrier company unable to find Blum even when the address is posted with the AusPost, anyway, long story short the box could end roaming around Sydney for days as the UPS's drivers are unable to call customers, company policy, so!

OK so for people that ordered in the second round all items are either shipped or ready for collection (Sydney guys).

I know there were a few people that missed out and there's been enough interest to open it back up for one (possibly) final order for now.

Limit of 10 sets per order (to keep under tax/duty limits) so once we hit the magic number it will close off.

$125 collected in Adelaide or $140 shipped. Add 2.5% if paying via PayPal.

I don't think is a placebo effect man, better sparkys help to a better ignition! :)

Stock coils only put out around 2 ohms while the r8 coils are closer to 5 ohms so you get a better/stronger spark. If you are running higher boost this helps ignite fuel better.

The only other thing I can suggest is to remove your wiring harness and look at the part# for your existing packs. Then see if this is compatible with the 2.0 motors.

The coils for the 1.4 TSI are a different shape / length and the plug is different. The R8 coils will not fit unfortunately. I think the Okada coils are your only option, but they are hugely expensive.

Good to hear. I think most of the coil packs from the 2nd GB have found their right home.

3rd GB is now closed - order has been placed with ECS.

Given recent history with shipments, these should be delivered within 2 weeks.

I ordered these based on an "expression of interest" however these have not been paid for so are now available for anyone else to pick up.

First in best dressed.

For those people that ordered coil packs in the 3rd shipment, these are due to arrive early next week (shipment has landed and is waiting for customs clearance).

I'll get these shipped out to everyone early next week.

I've had yet another request for more coilpacks.... so if you have tuned car and don't want to be stuck driving around on 3 cylinders (like me or gti88y) then send me a PM and we'll get a set of R8 coil packs sorted for your car.

Final GB items arrived today and will be shipped out to everyone tomorrow.

I'm not sure if I'll run another one of these GB's this way again as the $ was dropping in the middle of everything.

Too much risk having a fixed price up-front and then hoping the exchange rate holds up for 2 weeks....

Anyway when I've recovered from this lot and if there's enough interest I'll place an order and then advertise once I know what the landed price is going to be.

With the $ keeping on going South, the good times are about to come to an end I think....

I actually suspect it is because the US never got the R32. They only ever got a 2.5 litre 5 clyinder "Rabbit" and the 2.0t GTI so ECS has not included it on the list of suitable vehicles.

If it's is the same engine as in all the Audi 3.2 V6 motors then I'm pretty certain they will fit.

Worst case I'm sure you'll find someone in Melbourne with 2 litre Golf that will take them. :)

What is the advantage of these coil packs over stock?

Tigger73
17-10-2013, 12:16 AM
What is the advantage of these coil packs over stock?

They are red = they make your car go faster :)

On a more serious note though, a lot of guys with tuned cars have stock coil packs fail which is mighty inconvenient.

I've had this happen on my car and limped along on 3 cylinders to the dealer where the car sat for two days while they got a part in :(

So a lot of people upgrade the coil packs to the R8 ones as they are designed to be pushed a lot harder.

You probably won't notice a performance improvement but if it stops from having your car shut down a cylinder and have it off the road for a couple of days then it's a good thing.

Schrick32
17-10-2013, 12:21 AM
Of course! Red = Fast haha, ok thanks for the info mate but will have to pass for now :)

Tigger73
17-10-2013, 12:35 AM
Of course! Red = Fast haha, ok thanks for the info mate but will have to pass for now :)

Yeah some people do it just for the cosmetic upgrade - particularly if they're running without an engine cover. Though if you have an engine cover you won't see the coil packs anyway. Same with the red wiring harness covers is mostly (all?) for cosmetics.

For others it's for peace of mind that you're a lot less likely to have an issue. Also I do a fair bit of country driving and I'd hate to have one go when I'm 500km away from the nearest dealer (hence I carry a couple of spares in the boot also).

If you go to you local dealer you'll be paying around $100 just for one stock coil pack (and closer to $200 for R8 ones), so $140 for 4 (or $205 if you want a set of 6 shipped) is a pretty good deal I reckon.

I haven't heard it being as big an issue in the R32's as the Golf GTI/R.

Suggest catching up with a GTI/R owner and seeing if you can "borrow" a coil pack to test.

If the stock ones fit then the R8 ones will also.

As I said I don't think the R32 got the the US so you won't find much on Vortex on the R32.

Different shape/length and the plug on top for the wiring loom is different being the most obvious. Just from this i see that they wont be suitable for the V6 motors.

OK as the current shipment is all sold out and there's still a number of people wanting a set I'll get another shipment of R8 coil packs organised.

Looking to place the order by the end of the week so if anyone wants to get any other items with their order (e.g. spark plugs) you'll need to arrange this with me and make payment prior to me placing the order with ECS. As long as it's small/light you'll just be paying for the parts price - if you're getting coil packs the shipping is already paid for :)

If anyone wants any other (small) items shipped along with the coil packs (red wiring harness, hatch pop kits, spark plugs etc) then I can include these in with the order, however these will need to be paid for in full prior to the order being placed.

After all the Group Buys I've run it seems a little unbelievable but there are still people out there without R8 coil packs!!!

So I'm going to organise one last group buy for the year.

This is your final chance for 2013 to grab yourself a set of red R8 coil packs and possibly even wrap them up and put them under your X-mas tree.

As long as the dollar doesn't drop any further, I'll run these at the same price of $140 shipped (or $125 pick-up).

I'll be placing the order at the end of the week so again if anyone wants to add any small/light item (i.e. a set of spark plugs to go with your new coils) please let me know. I'll require payment for any "special" orders prior to me placing the order with ECS.

PM me the parts you require and I'll send payment details.

I am curious if anyone actually knows what the difference is?

Putting aside people spending money on changing something for no reason other than 'OMG ITS RED!' lol

But.... they're red!!!!

And google brought up this;

For those of you looking for more technical data on these coil packs, here is what we've found so far with our bench ( oscilloscope ) testing:

1) These coils can be used on your FSI/TSI engine at ANY level of modification. They function just as well on a dead stock car as a highly modified one.

2) They are NOT the same coils with red housings. The secondary circuit on the R8 coils has a higher resistance (more windings) than the stock coils. In fact the secondary circuits were slightly closer to the Okadas we tested than the secondary of the stock coils.

3) We tested these between 12 and 16 volts (remember if your alternator is charging properly the input will be right around 14). We tested them between 200 and 16,000rpm. The stock coils started to misfire at a much lower rpm than the R8's with a stock spark plug gapped @ .032".

4) The spark was visibly brighter and more intense on the R8's when compared to the stock coils @ every rpm we compared in the stock rev range. We didn't compare anything under 1,000rpm.

5) We were able to open the gap on the plugs much further with the R8's than the stock plug with out misfiring at the same rpm/voltage.

6) Here is what we were finding as an AVERAGE on the secondary circuit for each of the coils.

Stock: 3.3 M ohms
5 cylinder coils: 4.75 M ohms
R8's: 5.31 M ohms
Okadas: 6.2 M ohms

Yeah didn't anyone tell you that red ones go faster??

Seriously though main reason to change is due to stock coil packs failing. This occurs more frequently when you have a tune.

Seems the R8 coils are a stronger coil and less prone to failing like the stock ones.

So for $140 it's a bit of engine bay bling and has the added benefit of keeping you on the road :)

Haha, i knew the answer - but my curiosity was simply why are people bothering to change to the red ones as majority of members own a mk6 golf which have or had brand new ones which do not require any replacement until failure.

Surprised someone googled to find out an answer to why, as the real answer still goes to .. as you said .. 'because its red' - and no other reason!

Well on my own car we found just by changing to the hektic red coils and swapping the turbo we picked up 40kw at the wheels so they obviously make a difference

I'm looking at the bang for buck spark that you get with these not the colour.
Okada's are something like $800 for an extra 1 m ohm over the R8 which are $140 delivered.

With big turbo upgrades being the craze lately, it's a good buy I think.
From what I know, you're going to need more spark at these power figures than what the stock can supply.

If these were black I would still buy them.

The impedance allows you to calculate the voltage produced in the secondary side of the coil, think of it as a ratio of the secondary over the primary. So if you know the primary is 12v (approximately as it's the rail voltage minus the drop through the switching transistors) you can then multiply this by the secondary to primary ratio and you have your secondary voltage
See.... Easy

I doubt anyone's cars here will benefit over stock coils btw

Yes you're right you probably won't see any noticeable performance difference.

The main reason I changed mine was I had a stock coil fail and caused a cylinder to shut down which sent the car into limp mode. It was off the road for 3 days as it happened on a Sunday and the dealer had no coil packs in stock.

Majorly inconvenient but if it had done it out in the country then it would have been a long ride back on a flat bed truck.

Others may be luckier but as I have since found out it's not an uncommon thing to have a coil pack fail in a tuned car. So now I have been running R8 coils for the past 6 months without an issue. I also carry my stock coils as spares in the boot just in case...

So consider them cheap insurance :)

I didn't mean to say they aren't worthwhile though, perhaps I should have been a bit more clear, I've even bought some as part of this buy. Basically if you had to buy new coils you would buy a superior one like these and also if you think that your coils might be near their use by date its the most common sense option plus you keep the old ones as spares for the future. Even if you just like the refreshing colour change in your engine bay its still probably the cheapest thing you could do dollars wise as they are quite a bargain.

And yes I thought I was finished running these Group Buys a while ago but seems like there's an ongoing demand.

Shipment now finalised - all coil packs are allocated.

If you missed out ECS are having a sale at the moment so you bundle these with some other gear to save on freight.

Otherwise I'll probably organise another group buy early next year if there's interest.

Last call for the final 2 coil packs from the second shipment.... going... going...

And for anyone that has ordered a set of coil packs and would like to include a red wiring harness in their order for AUD$35 please PM me.

These wiring harnesses will only suit the Mk5 GTI, Mk6 Golf R, Mk6 Scirocco R and any other VAG that runs the EA113 2.0 engine. Unfortunately as Lucas_R found out earlier in the year they don't fit the EA888 as in Mk6 GTI, Tiguan :(

Please advise ASAP as lead time on the wiring harnesses is approx 10 days.
